Summary
Sunny is vain, vindictive, and tortured by a past he can't make peace with. He hates himself and everyone else and crawls through college at his mom's and stepfather's behest, having drifted away from his friends back home like Kel, Aubrey, and the Hooligans, even if the first two are in the same school now. Meds and alcohol can only take him so far, though, and he knows it. However, the looming date in his mind and the plan he's settled on are about to be disrupted by a chance encounter with a blue-eyed, blond weirdo he's certain he's never met before in his life--but there's never really such a thing as chance.

I haven't sat down to read fic in a very, very long time. Even after finishing this fic, I only just realized that there are two prequels that i will be reading possibly tomorrow.I really loved this fic. the characterisation of sunny&basil is really good and brought the interactions alive. initially, I was skeptical as I didnt enjoy post good ending fics that much but reading this felt like falling in love with this cast of characters again for the first time.
I came for the sunflower, but the characterisation of aubrey and kim really stood out amongst the rest. I never really enjoyed Kimbrey, so this is probably the first fic to have me invested in this pairing. I really, really liked it, even if I had to infer their history quite a bit( this is a fault on my end, cuz I hadn't realised that there wete two prequel fics)
I really liked sunny and basil's argument on the rooftop and the fallout of that also impacting aubrey and kim.
one complaint (that I have with myself) is that it was hard to comprehend or visualise the narrative location (is this the word? maybe its setting or backdrop) and situation at points of the fic. at certain points I knew what the characters were doing but not where & why or if it was happening within the same timeframe as the last paragraph (once again I think this is a skill issue on my end. i'll re-read again and update this bookmark.)
I type like ass (sorry!!!)
10/10 fic, I will reread this over and over again. this revived my love for this fandom

It's not easy having no friends AND being queer while living in a religious town, so Basil and Aubrey have it rough when they start fake dating to cover for their own identities. However, things might change for both of their lives when some new people turn up at school.
For Sunny and Mari, moving to Faraway from the city is a pretty big change. But perhaps it's one for the better.

Summary
In a small town like Faraway, outliers weren’t hard to spot, and the residents of Basil’s highschool made sure to remind him of that every day. Whether it be by being mean to him outright, or whispering about him in secret, Basil had always known he wasn’t exactly the same as everyone else. He had always known that the things he liked or the ways he acted or the things he felt weren’t “normal.”
He and his friends were okay with that until highschool- the kids there were meaner, and Basil found that as the days went by, he couldn’t help but feel more and more separated from everyone- especially Sunny. Noticing Sunny trying to distance himself felt horrible… and the sudden new familiarity he was starting to gain with the flowers he had always loved so much as a result wasn't a huge help, either.
OR: Highschool Hanahaki AU where neither Basil nor Sunny can seem to catch a break (or their breath) in regards to the other.

Satisfied, Kel continues. “Vampire!” For emphasis, he growls at the camera, then bares his teeth. “That’s right! Our friend Sunny is a real life, no cap, no bullshit, no prank, no artificial intelligence vampire and we’ll be using him to test several vampire myths!"
Or: Kel is an aspiring youtuber/myth buster who wants to expose his friend Sunny's undead status to the whole world - except nobody bothered to tell him he got the wrong guy and the actual vampire, Basil, is a few feet away, tending to some flowers.

We pick petals to know who loves us and who doesn't, but without them, the flower's fragile heart lays vulnerable. Should it survive, it needs to learn how to brave the tough world, lest it wither away.

There was something nostalgic about the suburbs. How quaint the little town of Faraway felt. It was there they would grow up and learn to be people. Through each and every memory they shared. Basil knew this well, and being as sentimental as he was, he wanted to experience life with Sunny. He wanted to help him through the rough times and share the perfect little moments. Because life for them was tough and imperfect, but they still could have hope for the future.
Maybe they could discover what it meant to live the suburban dream.
