Morse turned, back of his hand gesturing to some unknown place behind him. “There’s an abandoned school nearby, neighbor said. Closed about a decade ago—a boy’s school.”
Oh god.
The sound of Morse’s fingers ruffling through drying notebook pages sent a shiver down Jakes’ neck. The skin on his back felt suddenly taut, stretched too thinly over tight muscles. A tightening in his throat warned of a sudden oncoming bout of nausea.
“Ah yes,” Morse said, squinting down at the right page, “Blenheim Vale, he called it.”

“Carter? Open your eyes, man. Time to wake up.”
For a moment, he wonders whether he's back in rehab, enduring the relentless interference of the staff there. With every sensation that returns, though, this notion slips away. The mattress beneath him is certainly not comfortable, but it's a far cry from the sheet-less rigidity of his bed in rehab. He's warm, too, covered in blankets fresh from the dryer. The pain in his back feels like a distant memory.
And the voice that he hears belongs to Peter Benton

Summary
John knows what’s coming—it’s both a premonition and a memory. He can feel it in his skin and bones. The lattices of faded scars on his back begin to throb like a warning. Playing out before him is no longer the story of Peter and Reese, but that of a scrawny boy kneeling on the floor of Jack Carter’s study.

Summary
Carter follows behind him, feigning quiet composure, but doing a poor job at concealing the whirlwind of anxiety Peter knows is rippling just beneath the surface. Once again, he’s reminded of a much younger version of the man before him, one who bled the need for his mentor’s approval after each and every transgression, driven frantic by the need to make up, to convince Peter that he had a handle on things.
Peter hates to see a flicker of that returning now, under circumstances that pose no easy fix.
