Summary
wednesday pressed it closer, nearly enough for it to pierce through skin and spill a line of blood down to stain the collar of enid’s pretty dress. “you are in no position to ask questions of me.”
“you wouldn’t dare do it,” enid said. “what will you do when i go back to my family, bleeding, and tell them how wednesday addams almost cut my throat open?”
wednesday retained her unimpressed expression. “if you think i care the least bit about that, you are sorely mistaken.”
. . .

Summary
there was a pause before: “would you have asked me to it?”
“prom?”
she nodded.
wednesday watched her under the darkness. “if things had gone differently, yes, i would have,” she said. one of her hands lifted into the air and reached forward. enid’s eyes fluttered when that hand gently tucked a piece of her hair behind her ear, and she leaned into the palm that subsequently cradled her face.
enid brings up a bittersweet subject to wednesday: they never got to go to prom together. fortunately for enid, her girlfriend never does anything by halves.

Summary
enid stared at the smudged blood lining the dips in her skin before lifting her eyes back to wednesday.
her voice was rough, so unlike her, when she said, “do you feel guilty?” she lifted her hand, turning her palm to face wednesday. the blood glinted on her fingertips, glinted from light that didn’t exist in this reality naturally.
enid didn’t give wednesday the chance to reply before she stalked forward. her eyes narrowed, a grueling accomplice to the ever-present sneer upticking her lips.
“do you feel guilty?” enid repeated gravelly.
wednesday’s in a coma, but she doesn’t know.
in the midst of her oblivion, she continually finds herself in the graveyard from her vision. worse yet, she’s not alone. enid, intent on reminding her of her guilt, is always there—and she’s got a thirst for vengeance.

what better way to reconcile with a person, if not relearning them?

Summary
there was something almost poetic about the way it disappeared. it sated itself with the mere act of existing. enid would admire it, perhaps even envy it, if existing was something she desired.
instead, enid admired those swans she had once read about, the ones that soared high and let themselves fall without flying. she doubted that story was true, but the idea sounded nice.
enid wants to die.
it’s not some grand admission. it’s just the truth. a three-week spring break trip with wednesday to new jersey lets her think about the present, the past, and maybe even the future.

Summary
enid stared at wednesday for a long time. her face was deathly pale—paler than it usually was, the kind of pale that made enid feel sick. various instruments clung to her hands, all of them waiting for the next disaster to put them to use.
enid slid her gaze over the cuts, the bruises, and the battered canvas of her best friend’s exterior, and she willed her lip to stop quivering. she followed the line of the iv in wednesday’s hand back to the bag it dripped from, and that will grew tenfold.
enid’s perspective following wednesday’s accident, told from the latter’s hospital bedside.

Summary
enid was sashaying across the floor with fluidity, a milky glow casting luster atop her as she did so. her arms continued their graceful motions, sweeping through the air like creek water flowing over rocks, as she pivoted herself in different directions.
perhaps the most jarring thing about enid was the elegance she exuded at that moment. enid was nothing if not exuberant, nothing if not fiery, but she was now a living portrait of finesse that wednesday had never associated with her.
wednesday has come to learn enid is full of surprises. she manages to unearth a few more when she plays the cello for her to dance to.

Summary
wednesday pulled back and found one of enid’s hands again. it was slick with blood. she gripped it atop enid’s tattered chest like a lifeline as her eyes slid shut again.
stay awake. stay awake. wednesday might have said it once, but she wasn’t selfish enough to ask that of enid tonight.
a battle against fate is one wednesday can’t win, but it allows her to say goodbye to enid first.

Summary
it wasn’t only enid’s focus in fragments, though. wednesday’s eyes lingered somewhere below hers. she sucked in a breath. oh. wednesday looked up again, the barest flicker of alarm making home in the slope of her face.
in that moment, the last bridges of enid’s denial collapsed into the ravine they swung over.
enid wanted to kiss wednesday like the weight of the consequences wouldn’t haunt her lips.
enid would be lying if she said it wasn’t wednesday on her mind instead of her boyfriend. she has only one saving grace: she’s good at hiding. but enid’s not sure how much longer she can hide, not when wednesday looks at her the way she does.

Summary
enid pulled her knees to her chest and lay there, allowing her tears to soak into the fabric. she wanted the pillow to smother her.
it didn’t matter if she heard voices. wednesday was dead, and she was not coming back.
wednesday died during the final battle. after a new semester begins at nevermore, enid is stuck watching the world move on without her. she cannot forget so easily, not when a gaping hole has been torn out of her chest.
her reluctance to soothe a fresh wound is furthered when she hears voices that sound suspiciously like wednesday. while enid endures night terrors and shadows catching the edge of her vision, she cannot help but feel as though something has been left incomplete.

Summary
“dance with me,” enid shrugged noncommitally, her grin unwavering, as if her words hadn’t stilled wednesday and left her momentarily taken aback. “i’ve always wanted to dance in the rain with someone.”
wednesday decided to humor her. she unfolded her arms and rested her hands in enid’s, allowing her roommate to tug her forward.
nevermore has been drenched by rain for a week. wednesday doesn’t mind, but enid certainly seems to—until she doesn’t.

Summary
for a long moment, nothing happened. enid twitched her fingers against wednesday’s hair with bated breath.
a beat passed, suspended in ravaged desperation, and tears streaked her skin. not just any tears, though; black as obsidian, they pooled from wednesday’s tear ducts and slipped down her face. a lump formed in enid’s throat at the sight. she had never seen this happen before.
wednesday’s visions have been getting more intense. one night, it comes to a head.

Summary
there were things wednesday thought she knew about enid. she knew her eyes crinkled when she laughed. she knew her real smile was just slightly downturned. she knew enid cried to music and movies, knew she tapped her leg when she was anxious.
she wasn’t wrong, but as the days blurred together, she began noticing the things she knew lessened in frequency.
wednesday observes enid over the course of a few weeks. as she does so, she grows more concerned.
