Geralt’s eyes snapped open. The night was quiet and still, with not even the slightest hint of wind to stir the leaves on the trees. His medallion was likewise still, but it lay beside his ear on the bedroll instead of on his chest, and the section of chain across his neck was chilly instead of skin-warm. He must have moved while he was dreaming and dislodged it.

Jaskier survived an ordeal that ought to have killed him, and seems to have come out the other end no worse for wear. So it would be silly for Geralt to still be having nightmares. Ridiculous, even. It would be the absolute height of foolishness to go days without sleeping when everything is fine.
Because everything is fine.

Geralt’s shoulders were stiff, and his grip on Jaskier’s wrist was like a vise. Between them, the bite mark on Jaskier’s forearm still oozed blood. Just a tiny little puncture. He’d gotten worse from stepping on a sharp rock in camp just last week. The dead fox lay three paces off, its head facing away. From this angle Jaskier couldn’t see whether or not he’d imagined the foam at its mouth.
Geralt still wouldn’t look at him.
“Don’t say it,” Jaskier begged one last time.
“It was rabid,” said Geralt flatly.

At long last, Jaskier's luck runs out, and he acquires a mortal wound. It's lucky for him, then, that Geralt is far too selfish to let him die.

Summary
Jaskier adjusted the lute on his back, the city of Cintra on the horizon. He had not met any friends on his travels to the city, but then again, he hadn’t expected to do so. He was with several other bards, all responding to the call Cintra had made for bards to make a song cycle about Queen Cirilla’s reign. Even with his hasty exit from Redania, he managed to send a letter to a friend who he hoped would be a friendly face in the city, though they had not parted well.
The young queen was shrouded in mystery with a bit of infamy. Everyone knew that she was claimed by the Law of Surprise by the Butcher of Blaviken. The deranged witcher brought some of his witcher friends when Nilfgaard tried to conquer Cintra. Though Cirilla was only twelve at the time, her powers combined with the witchers were able to keep Cintra from the edge of defeat, though her grandmother still lost her life in the process. At the age of twelve, she was put on the throne, despite not being of age.

The malodour was almost unbearable as he opened the door with one hand and held his breath behind his other hand. His facial features were scrunched—and so it took him longer than he should have to see the horrifying, scaly, massive corpse blocking his front door.
With slitted eyes, he glimpsed row upon row of iridescent scales splattered with drying blood. Long, thin spikes on a humped back. Sharp, conical teeth in gaping jaws. Very sharp, deadly teeth—
He screamed at the top of his voice. Slammed the door shut and staggered away.
He shrieked, "Monster!"
________________________Jaskier lives alone in a cottage in the woods, selling handmade jewelry in the nearby town for a living. His solitary existence is uneventful, until he wakes up one day to find a dead wyvern on his doorstep, left there by an even more menacing creature. But when the creature later returns to his cottage, he discovers that it isn't so menacing after all--and befriends it.

Geralt knew the day was going to be a shitshow from how weak the barista had made his tea, wincing at the taste as he sat down at a table at the back corner of the coffee shop, his back and left side covered by the walls.
Geralt also knew the day was going to be a shitshow from the nervous way a young man, stood outside the cafe and stared, searching, into the large bank of windows into the shop.
He held a piece of paper in his hands and would go from reading at what was written on it, to staring up at the sign above the building, before looking back inside the place. Geralt hadn’t been in this profession for as long as had, hadn’t been as well trained as he was to not know instinctually that the man was probably looking for him.

Jaskier, the son of a powerful crime family, hires Geralt, the best contract killer money can buy, to protect him from his father, who is angered by Jaskier's refusal to join the family business.

Of course that was the case. Geralt was a witcher, so that much was a given. He’d accepted contracts for the weird and the outright ridiculous in his time. It took a lot to surprise him, given that he’d taken enough contracts with some sort of twist to them to end up half-expecting to be surprised whenever there was even the slightest sliver of an opportunity for ambiguity.
The world was just like that.
This, however had managed to throw him for a loop, and it wasn’t even part of the contract.

The contract itself was nothing out of the ordinary - it was the fact that he hadn’t been able to lose Jaskier before setting out, that was the problem.
Usually, he’d have left the bard behind, at a tavern, or an inn, but this time, Jaskier had latched onto him before he could walk away without him and wouldn’t be convinced to just leave, which was how Geralt ended up with a stream of running commentary as he did his best to figure out what was terrorising the locals without also contracting a massive headache.
Or: Jaskier makes a nuisance of himself on a contract.

Jaskier waited for Geralt of to distance himself from the camp well enough, before shuffling off his sitting place atop a rather uncomfortable tree stump, positioning himself so that he was eye-level with the extremely nonplussed horse.
Not, of course, that he wanted to shoo him from his own campsite, but how the hell else would he corner the man's horse?
At Oxenfurt, Jaskier had, much to his vexation, learnt that the word ‘nonplussed’ had two meanings – the first being ‘unsure about what to say, think, or do’, and the second, ‘not bothered, surprised, or impressed by something’. It was almost a contranym, it caused him no end of frustration, and it was the perfect word to use in this scenario, because how the hell was one supposed to get a read on the complex emotional state of a horse?
Nonplussed was right, because Jaskier couldn’t read Roach for shit, so he might as well have covered all his bases, instead.
“So,” he began, and it was a good way to open a dialogue, very solid, “why are you a horse?”
Or: When Jaskier finds Geralt and Roach at Posada, it's less of a first meeting, and more of a reunion.
