Summary
The second the words leave his mouth, Eddie wishes he could claw them back in. Reach out into the space between them—that chasm of distance that’s been building over the last several weeks. They’re twenty feet apart in literal terms, Buck’s sitting at the table and Eddie’s at the top of the stairs, clutching his hands in front of himself, but the entire world is separating them because—
Because.
Fuck.
He takes a step towards him, the rest of the firehouse falling silent as they all turn to look at him. That easy smile that was on Buck’s lips, that soft hope that lined his statement fading into obscurity as Eddie’s words ring vibrant and angry over it all.
Buck blinks, tilting his head like he doesn’t quite understand, and how could he? How could he understand? He never fucking gets it.
--
Or Buck wants to start a family, but he already has one.

Yeah, he—he’s finally ready for me to meet him? I think this’ll be good. If this all works out, I might—” Eddie took those final steps, numb as he listened, fear and anger and exhaustion sweeping over him. “I-I think we could. Make a good family, eventually. The—the three of us?”
Buck was smiling, the soft, elated thing that lights up his eyes as he’d stared off into the distance, lost in the image of what he could have.
And Eddie—
Eddie snapped.

Summary
He plops down on the couch again, sets his elbows on his knees, and looks Eddie in the eye. “Okay. Soooo,” he says. “You’re asking me to marry you.”
“Yes,” Eddie says.
“On a Wednesday,” Buck says.
“Yep.”
“As a friend.”
Eddie’s nose scrunches. “Ye-ep. Just about covers it.”
“Why?”

Bookmarker's Notes
And—he thinks it’s working. Eddie’s been more distracted, spacey, eyes lingering in inappropriate places, flushing when he gets caught. In terms of evidence, it’s plenty to go off of.
It’s still not love. But if Eddie wants his body, and he wants him in a domestic partnership way, and you slap those two together, is there really that much of a difference? Hell, Buck would take platonic bro-jobs for the rest of his life if it meant Eddie was touching him, and he could maybe possibly touch Eddie in return. Who really needs to hear the words “I’m in love with you,” anyway? Greedy people. People who want too much. Eddie shows his love all the time, in tons of nonverbal ways. Buck should count himself lucky that he’s even gotten this far—that by some miraculous stroke of fate, Eddie seems interested in more.
He just needs to figure out how to get him to crack

Summary
That was good, right? Alex, smiling. Eddie was so out of practice in this sort of thing. And even when he had been in practice, he was a disaster at flirting and dating and not having a mental breakdown at the mere idea of commitment. But Alex was smiling at him and joking with him and she hadn’t run off screaming. Yet.
That was as good an omen as anything.
Eddie mustered up all his courage. “Would you like to get dinner with me?”

Bookmarker's Notes
“I love you,” Eddie said, and for the first time in his life uttering those words to a significant other didn’t feel like an albatross across his neck.
It was the opposite, really; it felt like Eddie had been shouldering the weight of the world these last 34 years, and he was now, finally, free.
“You do mean romantically, right?” Buck asked, visibly nervous.
“Yes, I mean romantically.”
“Cool,” Buck said, clearly trying not to panic. “Cool, cool, cool, cool.”
