Ilya froze, all of the questions in his head like “What are you doing?” and “Why are you calling me?” and “Why haven’t we spoken in so long?” immediately dissipating because that didn’t matter, not when it sounded like–
“Are…are you touching yourself, Hollander?” Ilya asked, voice dropping low.
“N-no,” Shane whimpered and fuck he missed hearing him like this. His thready breaths alone made Ilya grab at his sheets, his dick immediately perking up in interest. “I’m not–I’m not touching. I’m–fuck–”
“You’re what?” Ilya demanded. “Finish the sentence.”
“I’m humping a pillow.” The admission hung heavy in the air, and for a split second, Ilya lost all ability to speak.

“Oh!” Harris says, holding up his hand and showing off the plastic device from earlier—it’s a black oval shape with a bright yellow, raised circular button in the center. “This is a clicker. It’s used for training for dogs. When Sadie does something good, you click and then give her a treat or praise. It’s to indicate she did something good! Positive reinforcement and all that jazz.”
“And if the dog is bad, then what?” Shane asks before he can stop himself. Ilya shoots him a curious look, one that asks why do you care? And it’s a fair question–it’s not like they’re planning to discipline Anya in any way. But Shane honestly doesn’t know why he’s so intrigued; he just is.

Summary
Instead of Shane, it is Ilya who suffers a concussion during the Boston-Montreal game in April 2017. Dazed and agitated, Ilya briefly starts speaking and responding only in Russian and the medics can’t calm him down. Luckily, Shane started studying Russian after Ilya spoke to him in Russian on the phone from Moscow. For no particular reason. Certainly not because he’s fallen in love with Ilya Rozanov.
In Montreal with lingering concussion symptoms, Ilya is advised not to fly home for a few days, and the hospital won’t release him without assurances that he has someone to stay with him until his symptoms improve. Luckily, Shane conveniently has a condo in Montreal no one knows about and a few days before he has to travel again.
But Ilya’s symptoms don’t resolve after a few days. Which is okay; Shane can handle it. He can take care of Ilya, study Russian, lead his team into the playoffs, and keep Ilya’s continued presence in Montreal a secret. He can do everything, no problem. He is Shane Hollander after all.

Summary
Ilya was used to hazing. He had been subjected to it, he had participated in it, and, as a captain, he had stood guard over the rookies and protected them from anything truly harmful. But if he had been asked, Ilya would have approved of this prank. He would have authorized it, given Cliff and Vicky his seal of approval, perhaps even helped orchestrate it.
Any other day, Ilya might have been happy to play along.
But, in perfect dramatic irony, it had not happened any other day. It had happened today. And, cherry on top, of course the rookie had to walk in when Shane was already freaking out about Ilya saying his name.
