Bouncing from home to home has been the defining factor of Tony’s life for the last four years. The future will undoubtedly be a cycle of lather, rinse, repeat, until the day he gets dumped on the street at 18, no longer anyone’s problem except his own. He’s long since accepted this reality.
When his social worker drops him off at the doorstep of the Barnes-Rogers household, she seems to think this time will be different. Tony’s not convinced.

“You’re not feeling so good, are you?”
No, no, he wasn’t! But Tony didn’t want to move even to shake his head in case it made Steve remember he was sick and try to do something dumb like set him down.
"I'm sorry, kiddo."

Or, Tony gets sick and it brings all his insecurities back up to the surface. Steve and the rest of his family take care of him anyways.

Losing someone close to you is rough. Grief is a strange thing, it affects appetite, sleep patterns, mood. May had reassured Peter many times that he was not crazy for feeling crazy. That he simply needed to give himself time.
He also read about the process of grief in a pamphlet Happy gave him.
So, when he gets back from the funeral at the lake house and walks into his bedroom to find Mr. Stark lying on the rug, ankles crossed, twirling his thumbs, and generally looking extremely alive…

Forty minutes into her book signing, Pepper’s hand is cramping up. Seeing herself perfunctorily smiling back at her from cover after cover after cover, is getting at her. It isn’t often that she wishes for someone to interrupt and insist on a photo. Or for one of these large, heavy bookcases to topple over and fall on top of her.
The next woman who shuffles up to her table, book clutched in her arms, might just be her selfie-saving-grace. She certainly has the wild-eyed look of starstruck-ness. Pepper smiles and holds out a hand to take the book from her.
The woman doesn’t relinquish it. “Ms. Stark,” she murmurs in a low voice. “My nephew Peter ran away. And I need the Avengers to find him.”
Pepper knows how to respond to requests like these. Kind but firm. Thirteen thousand people go missing in New York every year, and it’s heartbreaking, but the Avengers can’t possibly—

Chewing on the nail of his thumb, his knee bobbing up and down. Drops his pen, and then drops his clipboard when he bends down to pick up the pen.

Happy barely glanced up from his phone. “How should I know? I just drive you around, I don’t try to understand your designs. You’re the one who left it in the back of the car yesterday.”

Peter snorts. “You know I didn’t apply anywhere in Florida.”
“Please, kid, you know all you have to do is write a beautiful essay with my recommendation attached to it and you’re in. You’ve got the scores.”
Peter has a list. Of all the places he applied to, all the places he got into. A lot of it was encouraged by the adult role models in his life, some of it by Ned daydreaming about places like California and Colorado. Mostly, Peter just applied everywhere he could think of, because he’s known for a long time that Tony was gonna help May pay for it, and he didn’t wanna limit his options. Thinking about college has been strange for him, strange to the extent that he had a full blown panic attack about it in the middle of Avengers taco night last month. He can’t really understand it, doesn’t get why it feels like the end of the world—because he’s experienced the end of the world, and it’s not which campus has a bowling alley and which school has circus classes. But he nearly blacked out all the same, sobbed in Tony’s arms on the balcony until Tony proposed this. The road trip.

Tony narrows his eyes and turns the corner. Peter is splayed out on the third stair, in his Spiderman suit sans the mask, soaked to the bone. His hair is plastered to his forehead, he’s shivering, and he’s holding a gray cat clutched to his chest.
Tony stares at him. Both Peter and the cat are looking at him, wide-eyed, and then the cat meows again, breaking the silence.

Rhodey pays close attention and no, Tony doesn’t treat any of the other interns like this, and Rhodey has to accept what his head has been trying to tell him all along. It seemed... not right, somehow, to be using Spider-Man to make the whole ‘hunt’ thing his mom had set up easier. He was pretty sure it was literally just because of the obvious amount of effort that she put into the trail of clues, and that using his alter ego would feel like cheating.
And Mary Parker — Sabina Angeloff? — sure as hell didn’t raise a cheater.

“May!” Peter’s scream drowns out the loud bang from the apartment door. In equal parts surprise and shock, May jumps from the couch, the coffee in the mug spilling on her favorite (white) blanket. “I need you to teach me about babies!”
For a second, they just stare at each other.
“Peter, I know we never really talked much about… that, but considering what kind of school you’re going to, I thought that at least your Biology teacher would-”
“Nope! Not talking about that!” Peter screams just as loud as before, but now it’s out of horror and not excitement. “I’m talking about how to care for them, not how to-” He can’t even get the sentence out, not when this is indirectly about Tony and Pepper, because going anywhere near that topic with them makes him wanna vomit over May’s (already stained, so maybe it wouldn’t be that big of a deal) favorite blanket.
