“Anybody broken?” He hears Bucky say, somewhere further back, and increases his pace. It’s not like he’s embarrassed about getting hit, has been in the line of fire long enough to know that there’s no shame in it, and yet somehow, with this team, he has the overwhelming urge to show as little weakness as possible.
Yelena would have a field day with that line of thinking, would lecture him about trust issues and team cohesion and a slew of other complaints, but what she doesn’t know won’t kill her.
It’s not like any of them trust him, anyway, so it’s all a bit hypocritical.

He could picture the news headings now: “War Hero and Former Congressman James Barnes Killed on Mission with Disgraced Former Captain America.” They would conveniently leave out the fact that John was also a war hero. But who cared? He’d be the villain in the narrative, as was customary. John had gotten used to it.

They weren’t going to die, and Bucky didn’t need to know he was injured.

Or: The Thunderbolts* are forced to leave John and Bucky behind temporarily on a mission, and the two have to rely on each other if they want to get back to the Watchtower alive. Though it would have been helpful if John had told Bucky he was injured.

Bob promptly dropped the gun, his face paling while his eyes shot up to meet Walker’s.
“I’m so sorry! Don’t tell Yelena!” he squeaked.

He balked at him. “Why is that the first thing you’re worried about and not the gaping hole in my arm?!”Or: Walker decided to teach Bob how to use a gun because no one else wanted to. However, it goes spectacularly wrong when he accidentally misfires, and they now have to hide it from the team during movie night. What could go wrong?

He presses a hand against the pinch in his chest like that might help. And why does it feel like there’s a rod jammed low in his sternum–
“Oh, fuck,” she says, her gaze sweeping him up and down.
He glances down to see what’s upset her – maybe she’s just offended that his cologne rubbed off on her or afraid he’ll blame her for the minor road rash that stings all the way up his left arm–
“Oh –” the knot in his chest is actually a hole and it’s bleeding over his hand “– fuck.”
