He remembers the first time he saw Radzig after the truth was revealed— how suddenly he recognised the sweep of his hairline; the cut of his jaw; the shape of his smile. The reflection that stared back at him, not in still puddles, but polished bronze mirrors, was not spun whole cloth from his mother. He had been borne of loving union, the same as every other man of flesh and blood, save Christ Himself. And in Radzig's face, he could finally see that union realised.
Henry looks for himself once more, this time in the ugly remains of what had been his father.
Thirteen years after the Third Margrave Wars, the ugly spectre of violent death visits Henry of Skalitz once again.

Summary
"Can I help with anything?"
The question comes out more as a desperate plea than a helpful offer, at least to Samuel's finely tuned ears. Henry sits at the table, looking too large for the seat he'd chosen, one leg bouncing to escape his idleness.
"You're a guest here, Henry," Mame answers. "Guests do not lift a finger, unless it is for eating."
A simple lesson in baking challah helps Samuel learn more about his brother, about his mother, and about himself.

Autumn has arrived, and as their time at the Devil's Den draws to a close one of Hans's invented illnesses swiftly becomes a real one.

"You've slept in," Henry chides playfully. "You're usually up with the birds, you."
Hans issues a soft, breathy laugh from his nose. It's difficult to know how to respond when they're lying together like this. Beyond these walls it's easy to slip back into the routine of knight and squire, two young men who have fought in battle, and have every reason to laugh twice as hard for the deaths they've escaped. Within them, however, it feels nebulous. This feeling, this them: knight and squire; Galehaut and Lancelot; Hans and Henry. Two friends, two lovers. He hopes.
He hopes.
Hans's eyes point in the direction of his trapped arm and he opts to say, "My wing has been clipped."
Hans and Henry share a bed after the victory at Suchdol.

Theresa knows she must wait for him to excuse her. She knows this. Even without his celebrity in this town, his fine clothing is more than enough to indicate how this exchange is supposed to go.
But, he is yet to introduce himself. He is stuck in thought, and she can hear his mind keening, turning over itself.
He grips her arm. She is desperate to be elsewhere.
"Would you kindly excuse—"
"Sir Hans Capon of Leipa and Pirkstein," he says abruptly, and, with a smile, releases her—physically. His hand now free, he throws it in a gesture to the seat opposite. "Stay. Have a drink with me."
Theresa goes to fetch ale for her uncle and instead encounters an extremely irritating noble with his own agenda.
