Twenty years later, he has settled into a half-life at the margins of the world; mending pots, listening to rain, troubling no one and troubled by no one in return. When he goes to a spring festival, three not-quite-strangers happen upon his bench.

He thinks to himself: I cannot do this anymore. Tests the thought on his tongue without speaking it aloud. Thinks: I'd rather die than live like this, with everything I want at my fingertips and none of it allowed to me. In this of all places, he can be allowed honesty. So: Does he mean it?
Qifrey had never even considered taking on apprentices, at first. But navigating a life outside of the Great Hall forces him to consider what he wants to do with the time he has left.

Summary
Qifrey runs his hands up Olruggio’s legs, massaging them through the stockings as he goes. The thin barrier between them is hardly helping Qifrey retain a grasp on his composure. If anything, the illusion of chastity makes him more reckless. He kisses Olruggio’s calves, and drinks in Olruggio’s soft sighs. He kisses the backs of his knees, and savors the stifled squeaks of surprise. He kisses the soft skin of his thighs, which push against the tops of the stockings like they’re trying to burst free, and nearly drowns in the low, drawn out moan of a man trying not to. He kisses up the length of Olruggio until he’s slotted between his spread legs, desperately hoping Olruggio will wrap those legs around him, trapping him in place, and desperately knowing he mustn't.
Olruggio accidentally comes home wearing a maid dress. Qifrey lends him a hand.

Summary
There it was, that thing Qifrey did, where he offered a piece of himself wrapped in observation about someone else, like a gift hidden inside a gift, and you had to decide whether to unwrap the second layer or pretend you had only received the first. Olruggio had spent half his life learning to read these offerings and in doing so he had become the foremost scholar of a language spoken by exactly one person in all the world.
"I'm stubborn because someone has to be," he said. "You'd float away on your own mysteries if no one kept you tethered."
"Perhaps." The maddingly sad smile again. "Perhaps that's so."
In which Olruggio brings tea to Qifrey's study on a damp evening and finds him working in the dark again, the staff out and the fire dying.

His fright at the thought that Coco might have been in danger when he woke up was heart-stopping. The feeling he had when he thought he’d forgotten one of the simplest spells in his collection was….something else. Like a vice around his throat. A garotte of terror.
Olruggio can't claim to be the picture of perfect health and wellbeing, but things are getting strange. He's forgetting stuff - stuff that he really shouldn't be forgetting. And he doesn't know why.

Qifrey just looks at him. “I do.”
The rain continues falling.
(And so Olruggio forgets. And he inevitably figures it out again, because of course he does; and he inevitably chooses to forget again, and again, and again, because his heart is always the same. The story is always the same. Like a tale from under a silverwood tree, like a myth from the days of old, not so much tied by the constraints of the narrative so much as being narrative itself. Antigone must bury her brother. Iphigenia must be put to death. At a thousand turns, in a thousand ways, Orpheus must turn, and he must look, again, and again.
And Olruggio forgets.)
There is an old story about a witch and a silverwood tree.

"I know what I promised." He was half-blind and half-tree and irrevocably finished, and the sound of Olruggio begging him to take his memories was worse than anything the silverwood had done to him or would yet do. "I'm not going to do it."
In which the silverwood has pierced his lungs and Qifrey tries his hand at truthfulness with Olruggio. He hasn't got much practice, but Olruggio has always been willing to wait.

Summary
It’s stupid. It’s incredibly stupid, Qifrey knows this. But he couldn’t bear it anymore - the image of his dearest friend, of his body sprawled out, limp and fragile and unaware. The bodies that pile up, the vial of tears that are used and refilled - he cannot bear the repetition any longer, the sensation of hurting Olruggio.
