For many years, Olruggio has gone through his heats just fine. Their apprentices would leave, and Qifrey would accompany him to scent him and cook dinner.
However, this time, the pharmacy has not filled Qifrey's hormone balancing medication. He's become much more irritable and grumpy, but Olruggio is willing to look past that for a comfortable heat cycle with a friend.
Until Qifrey becomes a problem.

Wolfwood bristles, but Vash doesn't look his way. His voice is low and dark.
“You are going there. And you are going to stay there until you're healthy. Then you can go fuck off wherever you want to go. And I won't stop you.”
No matter how much he resists, Wolfwood is pulled to Vash like a magnet meeting its opposite. He knows he should leave him, but something within him cannot let him go.
And after Vash's time under Legato's hold on the Arc, he's looking worse for wear. Something in him changed on that arc, and Wolfwood dares to be curious.

One night, Agott catches a fever. Qifrey and Olruggio mother-hen over her relentlessly, and as they trip over each other, memories from Qifrey's childhood resurface.
As they do, Qifrey struggles with his identity and his relationship with his childhood friend. All of his feelings come to a head, and he buckles under the weight.

They'd only just ambled into the Kalhn textile shop when Qifrey caught sight of the short young woman working. She had a round face, rosy cheeks, flaxen hair. Her eyes had locked on Olruggio as soon as they’d entered.
Olruggio, for his part, thumbed through dyed wool samples as though he hadn't noticed. He likely wouldn't.
But Qifrey always noticed. Sometimes this left him as a voyeur: staring at someone staring at someone else. But other times, like today, his fixed presence at Olruggio’s side made him an involved party. There was always a delay, then a moment in which Qifrey became visible and the women realized he might be of help. Some of them were too scared to approach Olruggio outright—they’d built up a more intimidating version of him in their heads, had never heard him laugh wildly or watched dimples form when he smiled. Instead, they’d set their sights on Qifrey. Talk to him, or at least look at him imploringly, as though getting in his good graces might earn them the Torch’s attention.
He never felt like helping them.

Olruggio goes into heat like he does every month and Qifrey helps him like he always does. It get’s harder and harder for Olruggio not to confess his love but he resists to not ruin their relationship.
He’s greatful enough that Qifrey helps him through his heats.
