“They might”, Cait counters. “And I’m not going to lose you to something as stupid as an infection.” She is grateful Vi doesn’t ask if dying in a duel with a war lord would qualify as less stupid.

“I always only see one side of your face,” Caitlyn caresses the tattoo on Vi’s face, her eyebrow raised but Caitlyn continued before she could speak. “It’s the side that stands by my side, the side I see when we have our weakest moments, when we make love at night.”
Caitlyn shuffled onto her lap then, Vi chuckled but brought her hands to Caitlyn’s waist, turning to follow her face, they shared air for a moment before Caitlyn’s hand felt its way over her shoulder and up her neck. “What are you doing?” Vi laughed a little, the angle felt odd but she didn’t protest, staying still as Caitlyn carefully brushed her hair out of her face and held it back.
“This is the side that protects me. I don’t get to see it much, but it’s always there,” Caitlyn placed at first careful then gentle kisses along her cheekbone to her brow. “The only place I see your whole face is where I can’t gauge your distance,” Caitlyn’s voice cracked a little as she pulled back again and looked at the side of Vi she’d deemed protector.
“You can talk to me, Violet,” Caitlyn said quietly.

A bad start, but it’s what comes first, when Vi thinks of her parents and Vander and the others. Death. It happens to someone else, and everyone acts like it happened to you.

Reeling in the wake of her mother's death, Caitlyn navigates a new kind of darkness. Vi, impossibly guilty, keeps pulling her out of it, which isn't easy when you have a darkness of your own to contend with. Grief is loud. Fortunately, so is love.

Vi doesn’t go inside Caitlyn's room. Maddie does. The fiancée. The woman Caitlyn chose.
Vi should leave. She should let go. But some things never stop moving, even when they should. Even light, when it’s close enough to the edge, can’t escape.

Summary
After ten years in Stillwater for a crime she didn't commit, Vi breaks herself out and goes home. Her homecoming doesn't go like she thought it would.
Two years later, she's out of control and out on the streets. She's now a champion pitfighter, a raging alcoholic, and completely on her own. Despite her family's best (and desperate) efforts to help, Vi's on a one-way track to ending up either dead or back in prison.
At the same time, Caitlyn arrives in the undercity to collect data and information for her thesis. She starts her research from a local bar called The Last Drop, which puts her right into Vi's path. Vi might have been out of her family's home for years, but she's still not going to let a topsider put them in danger.
Canon divergence (everyone lives!), enemies to lovers (barely, the lovers aspect happens fast), angst, trauma, addiction, and also fluff and humour (because these things can co-exist!)

It was a room. A very precarious state of what should be a room. Or maybe cell was a better description. There was a sink and a toilet on one side. A metal bed attached to the wall in front of her. Everything seemed very old, as if it had been stored and forgotten there for years.
Caitlyn saw she was not alone. Under the bed, occupying the smallest possible space, there was a person.
A child.
"What's your name? I'm Vi," she continued when there was no response. If Caitlyn couldn't see the girl's chest rising and falling, she'd doubt whether she was even alive. "This is Caitlyn. Who are you?"
The minutes passed. Caitlyn was already thinking of her fifth contingency plan when the child moved. An almost imperceptible movement. A slight lift of her neck, allowing for a better view of her intruders. "Lavender," her voice was thin, yet hoarse, as if it hadn't been exercised in a while.
"Nice to meet you, Lavender."

“Hey,” Vi says, running a thumb soothingly along Caitlyn’s pulse, and though Caitlyn doesn’t break her focus, the tension she holds in her jaw relaxes. “I happen to have firsthand experience on how good you are with your hands, Cupcake.” There’s a husk across her tone that she doesn’t really mean to let out, but— well, that’s a lie. That’s exactly what she’s going for. “You can handle a little haircut.”
Caitlyn shudders as the words meet the air. Vi tries not to smirk in satisfaction.
“You can’t say such things while I’m holding a pair of shears so close to your neck,” Caitlyn says lowly, voice dripping down like molasses. “It’s dangerous.” Her chiding whispers dance across Vi’s cheekbone, the blunt side of the blade making contact with Vi’s skin, and— oh. Vi’s definitely the one shuddering now.
Vi chuckles to hide the shiver curling up her spine. “I really affect you that much?”
Caitlyn hums, dragging her fingers through Vi’s damp bangs to measure their length. “Coy isn’t a good look on you.”
