Summary
Once everyone graduated from high school and narrowed their focus to their own lives, no one noticed when Matthew disappeared and it took a little too late to realise he was gone. From that moment on there wasn't a moment of rest because with each revelation they knew less and less and were left with more questions weighing onto guilty shoulders. The 'why?' would always haunt them and with Matthew seemingly gone for good, everyone finally noticed a void inside them that could never be filled.
The void was biggest for Alfred, who without his twin felt like he was missing half of himself and it was his fault. It took Matthew leaving for everyone to finally realise it was them who drove him away in the first place... and now it couldn't be fixed.
OR, It took them a little too long to notice that someone was missing. That Matthew had left and simply walked out their lives, for good. Without any answers, the guilt eats them alive.

Lee Smith burned out on school, then took a gap year. Which turned to 2 years. Then 3. Desperate for financial independence, he began working in a restaurant and climbed his way to a respected chef due to his surgical precision with knife, leftover from failed medical studies.
In the blur of work days, a mess of blue hair and a sketchbook breaks up the monotony. He memorizes every small detail he can get per-visit, speculating on their life and falling into an obsessive cycle.
NOTE: Some of the listed warnings have not happened yet, but I'm planning for them in future chapters! Also, I am not a chef, apologies for any inaccuracies.

Kenny was doing much better these days—he had a car, he had a job, both of his parents were long-term employed, and he got to see his best friends every Saturday night.
This whole Butters thing was really disrupting his equilibrium.
Sure, they’d known each other practically their whole lives, there were even points in time where they hung out with Butters more than they did with Cartman—and who could blame them? There had been days in their childhood where they would get stuck together for whatever reason, good or bad, and Kenny didn’t really remember ever thinking poorly of him or fondly of him, either.
That was a long time ago; memories were foggy and distant for someone like Kenny, who had dealt with much more in his nineteen years of life than most people did ever. He couldn’t help but wonder what Butters had dealt with in all these years, too.

"I needed you.” Stan repeated. He was impressed by how calm he felt at that moment. That same cyclical emotional pattern was whirling in his chest yet again: anger-grief-shame, anger-grief-shame. “I got married, I had a baby, and you weren’t there for any of it. All I wanted was for my best friend to stick around for me and be by my side- but when I needed you most, you disappeared.”
Kyle cast his eyes down. “I couldn’t be there.”
“Why not?”
Kyle didn’t answer. He just stood there with his hands at his sides, clenching and unclenching. Stan was suddenly very aware of the eyes on them. While he wanted them to hash it out, he didn’t want to do this in public. Luckily, the tinkling of knives on champagne flutes indicated that there was no more time for talk.
“This isn’t over.” Stan promised him.
Kenny and Marjorine's upcoming nuptials drag the whole fourth grade class back to South Park. Stan and Kyle, siblings of the bride and groom, prepare to meet again after eight years of distance. Stan wants to forgive, Kyle wants to forget, and Ike really wants them to finally figure their shit out. Their plans immediately derail.
