Summary
“Have you had dinner?” he asks after a few minutes.
“… yes.” Shinsou’s tone doesn’t hold much conviction. His eyes avoid Shouta’s, shadowed by a nearby overhang. Shouta raises both eyebrows and looks skyward.
“Oh, really. What did you have for dinner?”
“Konbini coffee and some tictacs?” Shinsou makes hesitant eye contact with him again, rubbing at the back of his neck. Shouta snorts.
“Oh well in that case, I’m sure you’re fine then.” He rolls his eyes, nudging his mentee over toward the front door of the izakaya, glass half blocked by old window clings and faded advertisements. “In here, come on.”

Summary
Hitoshi stares up at the ceiling of the room. It's the middle of the night and he should be asleep but it's not as if Hitoshi expected anything else.
He barely sleeps and by now he's no longer sure if he's simply wired like that or if his childhood spent in hyper-vigilance has made him like that, but it's not as if there's a chance for him to change it.
Sleep, to him, comes in twenty to forty minutes bursts; after that he jerks up, as if it's unsafe, as if he needs to check his surroundings in those set intervals and Hitoshi has long since stopped being angry about it.
Being angry takes energy and he barely has any these days and the little he does have, he needs for something else. Training with Aizawa is exhausting most of the time, a mix of not enough food, not enough sleep and the general struggle of physically training and for a few desperate nights Hitoshi had hoped that maybe that exhaustion would be enough to actually make him sleep.
What a fool he'd been.

Summary
"You'll have to do better than that," Aizawa's mild voice cuts through Hitoshi's already agitated thoughts and it's nothing he hasn't heard before, it's not a new sentiment to him at all, but somehow, it's worse.
It's so much worse today, and with everything that has been building up over the last week Hitoshi just—snaps.
"I can't do better than that!" he yells, right into Aizawa's face and throws the capture weapon on the ground. "This is already my best! I'm too stupid and too slow to do any better than what I've been trying all this goddamn time!"

Hitoshi doesn't know what he expected but of course Aizawa would eventually bring up quirk training in their sessions.
"No."
It's instinctual, comes to Hitoshi without a second thought and he knows it's stupid, knows that one of these days he'll have to train with his quirk, too, but—no.
He's not ready for it. He needs more time to come to terms with the fact that he has to do it, needs more time to accept that his classmates will see him using it and most of all, he needs to prepare for the fact that he'll use it on them, against them, and he's not there yet.
And he's especially not ready to use his quirk on Aizawa, unsupervised and without witnesses.
