Tsukauchi Naomasa

Summary:

I examine the lie detecting quirk of everyone's favorite detective in this thrilling sequel

Notes:

This one was a little confusing, since the fandom appears to have decided his quirk is Polygraph (which on the wiki is apparently his sister’s), however in the wiki its says nothing about his. I’m gonna keep with the assumption he has it, since his alias is ‘True Man’

This is a shorter one, since I did most of the brainstorming in class (whoops), and there's little to no information about this quirk.

Work Text:

Quirk Name: Polygraph

User: Tsukauchi Naomasa

Quirk Function Theories:

  1. Hyper aware of tells?
    1. *Specifically lying
  2. Innate understanding of expressions (& body language?)
    1. Understands people very well
    2. General, constantly active
    3. *this could be low key super powerful with the right training
  3. Mind reading? *could be only knowing if someone’s lying, or having some sort of meter.
    1. Fits best if user’s quirk is the same as his sister, which is activated upon touching.
    2. Could it be detected by users with similar mental quirks? *like, say, brainwashers? :)
    3. Could user influence how honest a person’s answer is?

*Detecting for answers addressed to user, or just in general?

*What if the person is lying to themselves, and believes it? Could it register as both?

Quirk Application Theories:

  1. Interrogations *obviously, but it had to be said
  2. Undercover infiltration
    1. User might be recognized based on their quirk
    2. Could be useful depending on if they subconsciously are hyper aware of body language, or if they can mind read.
  3. Working with people, in general *but mostly only if it’s body language.

Training Quirk:

  1. Learn language nuances. There are a lot of ways to circumvent questions
    1. A way around this would be to ask the same question multiple times, sometimes worded differently. Record every word said.
  2. Practice detecting lies said without realizing.
  3. Learn body language, even if that’s in the quirk! Might be even easier to be more aware and in control of quirk.

Quirk Strengths:

  1. User might be a naturally honest, trustworthy person.
  2. Better in social situations? *Fits best if it’s body language, or mind control.
    1. Understanding of body language, and tells, means user might know more about how to avoid the truth, while not outright lying. *user could probably get through an interrogation using that.
  3. Once active, screws over those who can’t think up ways to get around questioning.

Quirk Weaknesses:

  1. User is a naturally honest person, might be difficult for them to lie.
  2. Language nuances. It can be very easy to say two contradicting statements, and have them both be true.
    1. *How would sarcasm register?
    2. Answers which are both true and false.
  3. Over reliance on quirk may lead to user being naive.
  4. What if someone was lying to themselves, and believed what they were saying?
  5. Sensory overload, if it’s constantly active, and works like a radius.
  6. Person could ignore user’s question, and answer a different question, talking to themselves
    1. Ex: user: “is the sky blue?” person: (‘am I left handed?’) “no.”

Methods to Fight User:

  1. Saying wonky sentences that lead in circles.
  2. Don’t answer the user. Answer yourself.
  3. Convince yourself fully of the lie so you completely believe it.

Further Notes:

A very powerful day to day quirk, in typical hero-ing it wouldn’t do much help until the criminal/villain is in custody and questioned. Tons of opportunity for undercover spying, though! And since his face is kinda plain (sorry Tsukauchi…) it would make him even more forgettable and perfect for that!
