Chapter Text
“Bullet, how are we looking?” The question came quietly through Evan’s earpiece, he was positioned away from the rest of his team. A scout. He was to watch through the scope of his sniper rifle and relay anything out of the ordinary that he saw, but he also had to tell his team when it was safe to go in.
It was one of the most stressful things he does on every mission. They’re lives resting on his hands. If he sends them in even a second too early, they could all be dead. If he sends them in with an ambush waiting for them on the other side, they would all be dead. And it’s all in his hands.
But they trust him. He trusts himself. He’s done this so many times over the years as a SEAL. This is nothing new for him. He knows how to do this.
So, he looks through his scope one more time, checking everything, then checking it again. “We’re looking good, Rally. All clear guys, head in.” He relayed through his earpiece.
Eyes never leaving the scope. He watches as his team goes into the near abandoned house, which wasn’t actually abandoned because it was harbouring one of the most wanted men of the US inside.
Evan watched as James ‘Rally’ Monroe and Mike ‘Mockingbird’ Blight were the first to go in through the back, rifles in position – ready to fight if anything were to go wrong.
He watched as Stuart ‘Hornet’ Brett, Amy ‘Capon’ Hernandez and Carlos ‘Snake’ Dyer followed behind them, rifles in their shoulders, safety off and alert. Carlos would’ve usually been followed closely by Balu – the teams demolitions and narcotics dog – but because they weren’t searching for anything Balu was back at base waiting for them to come back.
Eyed tracked as Callum ‘Rider’ Moore and Jordan ‘Redstar’ Nelson are the final two to make their way in through the sides, they’re the back up. The last resort. Hopefully – if everything went according to plan – those two wouldn’t have to do anything.
After watching his team all successfully make it in, Evan sets out on his own part of the mission. Locate Aarmin Pollocy and take the kill shot. Aarmin was the ringleader of this operation.
Evan had no problem with completing his mission. Really, he thought such a high-profile man would stay away from windows, but no. There he was standing in the second story window, distinct neck tattoo on full display. He knew this was the man he was after.
He lined up the shot through his scope. Making sure there was no way that he would miss this. He was the best at this. He’s a sniper, has been for so long. He knows he can do this.
With the shot lined up and his breathing steady Evan goes to take the shot, finger resting on the trigger guard as he waits for the signal, he quickly flicks of his safety and relaxes into his rifle, his line of sight hadn’t changed. He had the perfect shot. He just needed the signal.
“Shot lined up and ready.” His voice came out so quiet, not wanting to stir his position in anyway and ruin this shot.
His radio crackled to life as the voice of Rally came through, “Take the shot Bullet.”
He didn’t waste a second after those words were spoken, he took one last breath in and one last breath out and when his lungs were empty and he couldn’t breathe out anymore, his finger pressed on the trigger.
The world seemed to slow down as Evan waited for the bullet to meet its target, he swore he could see it moving in slow motion through the air towards that window, then the world sped up again and it hit.
Aarmin went down, blood splattering from the hole in his head.
Then the air was filled with noise. Shouting and screaming on a language he couldn’t recognise from so far away, the next to join was the sounds of gunfire ringing out from within the house.
This is the part Evan hated when he was stationed so far away. He couldn’t see what was happening with his team, the only indication what was going on that he could get was from the sounds of gunfire and – if he was lucky – the occasional message over the radios.
He just had to keep looking through his scope, watching and not being able to do anything other than wait for an enemy person to get into his range of firing. If that were to happen Evan doesn’t hesitate, he shoots as soon as he see’s them, because if he doesn’t that could cause further problems for his team inside.
Only a couple of minutes ago it had been so calm and quiet and now that had been disturbed and the air was filled with noise. Shouting, screaming, shooting, and more shouting.
Then it was all gone again. The shooting stopped, there was no more shouing, and Evan’s radio was brought to life once again. “Mission complete, everyone status report.” Rally’s voice again.
Oh god how Evan loved that man’s voice right now. It was the confirmation Evan needed to relax into his rifle and just breathe for the first time in what seemed like hours since the shooting started.
Slowly everyone’s voices flittered through the radio, confirming that everyone was okay and safe now.
“Bullet, your kill is confirmed. I repeat Aarmin Pollocy is dead.” A heavy sigh came from Evan’s mouth at that, good. He thought, his mission was a success.
“Okay boys and Capon let’s head back to base” Mockingbird spoke through the radio, it was something he’d always said at the end of a successful mission, it used to be just ‘okay boys’ but when Amy joined it was changed to include her.
They were all back at base and talking and laughing all together, the stress of the earlier mission completely gone.
“God I can’t believe how long it’s been since we were on home soil, you know?” Amy was the one to bring it up, the one who started the rest of the conversation.
“I know right, like we’ve been deployed for a year and a half, we’ve had so many missions, and this is the first time we’re back in America in all this time.” Carlos sighed as he opened his mouth again, “And God I miss my wife so much, I mean I get that we can talk over video but its not the same.” Carlos had married his wife April two years ago, which meant for most of his marriage he hadn’t been there.
“I know what you mean Snake; I miss Eddie and Chris so much. I mean we had just moved to a new city and then I get called out, I just- I’ve missed so much. Chris has grown so much, and I haven’t been there for any of it. Eds started his new job, and I wasn’t there.” Evan had always been vocal on how much he missed his husband and son, especially this time.
For the eleven years he had been part of this team, this was the longest they had been deployed, I mean they even got two new members all whilst being out of America.
Everyone looked at Evan with sympathy in their eyes. They all knew about Evan and Eddie, how they had met in Afghanistan and fallen in love with each other from the start, how for most of their relationship at least one of them had been deployed. They all knew about the struggles they faced because of Chris’ medical condition.
“Just think of it this way, we’re all going home to our families soon, we’re all gonna get to see them again.” Mike said, always the dad of the group.
“Yeah, hopefully sooner rather than later” Callum said as he and Jordan sat next to each other with Balu rested over both of their legs.
