Rays of sunshine were shining in through the open cracks of the blinds, and birds were loudly chirping in the tree right outside their window. Amy began to groan as she felt her body waking up. Her eyes fluttered open, and she tilted her head down so she could see her boyfriend, who was lying on her chest. Her eyes became half-lidded as she gave a small smile at the scene.
He was lying on her bare breasts, the top half of his body moving up and down with Amy’s breathing. She started to stroke his quills in a calming pattern. She often woke up earlier than he did—and 80% of the time, she woke up with him lying on top of her.
She didn’t mind waiting for him to wake up in the mornings; she often found it to be the best part of her day.
She continued to stroke his quills in silence until he shifted his body on hers with a groan. “Shadow?” she whispered in his ear. “Mmm?” he hummed with his eyes still closed. His body was practically melted on top of hers, and it was obvious that he had no plans on leaving.
It was a Saturday morning, and they both had nowhere to be, but Amy still always liked to get up and start her day. “Are you hungry? I can go make you breakfast,” Amy said gently and lovingly in his ear. He didn’t respond for a few seconds; Amy had just assumed he’d fallen back asleep. “No,” Shadow responded as firmly as he could in his drowsy state.
“Not hungry.” He gave a chaste kiss to the side of her breast before twisting his head. She sighed. She felt like Shadow never wanted to do anything but be as close as he could to her— not that she was complaining. Though, she would like to put some form of clothing on. Her clothes had been discarded because of their activities from the night before.
Shadow began to stroke her arm closest to his face, a continuous pattern of up-and-down motions. Amy was now stroking his back and drawing soothing shapes with her fingers. Amy was staring at the halfway-open blinds. She wasn’t staring at anything in particular, just kind of zoning out.
Amy tried shifting to get out of bed, but that just made Shadow lay on her harder.
“No,” he said sternly, but not in a malicious way.
“Come on, Shadow… I’m hungry…”
Amy was now shifting uncomfortably from the hours of heavy weight that had been on top of her. Shadow didn’t say anything, but then he started to kiss up her collarbone and then to the side of her neck. Amy let out a stifled moan. “Shadow…”
“Hmm?” he asked her, smirking into her neck. “It’s too early,” Amy said, trying to gently push him off of her. She didn’t want him off of her; it was more of a “don’t do something you’ll regret later” kind of shove.
He didn’t pay any mind to her gentle push and just kept giving her sweet pecks on her neck. To any other couple, this would just seem like an affectionate gesture, but she knew Shadow; she knew what he was trying to do.
She had never been one to say “no” to sex, but at this point, her stomach was growling, and she was desperately in need of water.
“I want you, Amy,” Shadow said, now giving her open-mouthed kisses to her neck, jaw, and ears.
“Shadow… I’m starving. After we eat, we can do it, okay?” She tried to give him a compromise for his and her needs.
“Fine.” He pressed one sweet kiss to her cheek as he lazily flopped off of her. Amy got out of bed and put on her shorts and tank top. She gave a lazy stretch with a yawn. “You’re not joining me for breakfast?”
She walked over to his side of the bed, took his loopy arms, and pulled him up. “Come on, sleepyhead!” He was now sitting up with his legs hanging off the side of the bed; she was in between his legs. She wrapped her arms around his neck and gave him a deep, passionate kiss on his lips. He placed his hands on her hips and closed his eyes.
Amy always gave him a big kiss before he got out of bed; it was kind of like their own tradition they had gotten in the habit of doing over the past few months of living together.
They both broke the kiss, and Amy burrowed her nose in the crook of his neck.
“Amy… I love you so much.” He was always the first to say “I love you” in their relationship. She always felt bad because she never said it first, so now she tries to race him to it. She was too late this time.
“I love you too, baby.” She gave him a quick kiss on the neck. She pulled his arms so he would stand up. “I’ll get you your coffee.” She cupped his cheek, giving him a quick smile. She opened their bedroom door and made her way to the coffee maker. Shadow rubbed his eyes and gave a glance to the alarm clock on his nightstand.
“7:37”
Shadow gave a quick groan before leaving the bedroom as well. He saw Amy’s back turned to him as she watched his cup fill with coffee. He made his way over to her and leaned his forehead on the back of her head. He shut his eyes and relaxed there. She gave a cute little giggle.
“Why have you been so tired lately?” she asked him, turning around so she could face him. He groaned in response as he wrapped his arms around her body and put his forehead on her shoulder. The small of her back was up against the counter now, while she was rubbing his back.
“Are you really okay, Shadow?” The question had genuine concern laced into it.
“I don’t know… I just want you. I can’t put it into words right now.” He pulled her closer to him, and he contemplated if he should try to tell her the reason or just stay quiet. “I guess I just realized how boring my life was before you… You are my everything, and I can’t ever seem to get enough of you.”
The words falling from his lips made her heart churn. “Shadow… I can’t get enough of you too…” She really didn’t know what to say at that moment; she felt sorry for him but flattered that he loved her so much. The coffee maker beeped finally, pulling them out of this sweet moment.
Amy tried to move to grab the mug, but Shadow kept her in place. He just cuddled deeper into her shoulder. Amy didn’t try to fight him or push him off; she knew he needed to just stay here in this embrace for a moment. She started to trace shapes gently on his back. After a while, he stopped being so tense and just melted onto her shoulder with a muffled groan.
They didn’t move for what felt like hours, but really it had only been about five minutes. “Okay, come on—drink your coffee,” Amy said, giving him a quick kiss at the corner of his mouth. He still had his arms wrapped around her body as she turned to grab his coffee.
She dropped the mug in his hand as a way of saying, “Here you go!” He took the mug from her with a gentle smile before giving her a sweet kiss to her forehead.
She gave a quick giggle before gently shoving him to go sit down. He raised his free hand in a goofy, defensive way, telling her he was going. He sat down on their bar stools as Amy prepared their breakfast.
“Why don’t you let me help you this time? You never let me help you,” Shadow said, rolling his eyes playfully.
“No! You do everything for me; the least I can do is make us breakfast.”
“I do everything for you because I love you, Amy.” You could hear the embarrassment in his voice. It wasn’t that he was embarrassed to say that he loved her—no, quite the opposite. He was embarrassed as to how sappy he sounded.
“Well!” She paused for a moment, trying to think of the best thing to say. She relaxed her shoulders with a quick sigh before continuing, “It’s just that… you do everything for me, and I feel like I never do enough for you. That’s all.”
Shadow felt a type of satisfaction in his heart but also a disappointment. Amy did everything for him just by being there! She could punch him square in the face, and he would find it attractive that she could hit him that hard! He could never understand what went through his girlfriend’s mind.
“Amy, you just being by my side is enough.”
“I know, I know! But I don’t feel like it’s enough, you know?”
She gave him his plate and set hers next to his on the counter. She began to dig into her food as Shadow watched her with a loving gaze. “What?” she said with a small giggle, stopping her fork halfway. “Nothing.” He gave her a small smile before moving a stray quill from out of her face.
He started to give gentle pecks to the side of her face before moving down to her neck. “Shadow, that tickles!” She rested her hands on his chest, pretending to push him off of her. He moved his hands from her waist down to her hips. As he was exploring her body, he moved his hands under her tank top. She placed her fork down and looped her arms around his neck, inviting him into her neck.
He now started to give open-mouthed kisses to her neck while also giving tiny nibbles. She raked her hands through his quills in a loving way.
This type of love was the love she had always searched for but never found—until now. Shadow was all she needed and all she wanted. She couldn’t see herself waking up with anyone else in the morning, and neither could Shadow.
Shadow never knew what he wanted—but he knew he wanted Amy. He wanted all of her, and every day felt just as exciting as the last. He never once doubted his love for her and never will.
