The adrenaline from the show still hummed faintly in the air even an hour after they’d left the stage. The Manchester Arena had been electric tonight — 20,000 fans screaming every word back at them, the kind of night that reminded them why they put up with the insane schedules and never-ending travel.
Now, though, exhaustion had hit like a freight train.
The green room in the arena’s backstage area was a mess of half-empty water bottles, discarded hoodies, and guitar cases. Most of the crew had already cleared out, leaving just the five of them and a couple of security guards who knew better than to disturb the boys when they were in this tired state.
Niall was sprawled on the floor with a bag of crisps, Liam was nursing a protein shake while scrolling through his phone, and Zayn had claimed the single armchair, legs dangling over one side as he sketched idly in a notebook.
And then there was the couch.
Harry and Louis had collapsed onto it almost the second they’d walked in. Harry had been the first to sit, legs stretching out with a dramatic groan. Louis, buzzing with leftover energy but clearly dead on his feet, hadn’t even hesitated. He’d simply climbed on top of Harry like it was the most natural thing in the world — chest to chest, legs tangled, face tucked into the crook of Harry’s neck.
Harry had let out a soft, sleepy laugh, one arm wrapping loosely around Louis’s back as he shifted to get comfortable. Within minutes, both of them were out cold.
“Would you look at that,” Niall whispered, grinning around a mouthful of crisps. He nudged Liam with his foot.
Liam looked up and his face immediately softened into a fond smile. “Wow. They’re completely gone.”
Louis was fully draped across Harry. One of his legs was hooked over Harry’s hip, his smaller frame moulded perfectly against Harry’s longer body. His head rested on Harry’s chest, right over the butterfly tattoo, fringe falling messily across his forehead. Harry’s chin was tucked slightly forward, nose buried in Louis’s hair, one large hand splayed possessively across Louis’s lower back while the other rested on his thigh. They looked impossibly comfortable, like they’d been made to fit together exactly like this.
Zayn set his notebook aside and leaned forward, elbows on his knees. “It’s actually disgusting how cute they are,” he said, but his voice was warm, eyes crinkling at the corners. “Look at them. Harry’s got him pinned.”
Niall snorted quietly. “Louis’s the one who climbed on top of him like a koala. Bold as brass.”
They watched in comfortable silence for a few minutes, the only sounds the distant hum of the arena being dismantled and the soft, even breathing of the two boys on the couch. Louis’s mouth was slightly open, a tiny bit of drool threatening to escape onto Harry’s black t-shirt. Harry’s curls were wild, sticking up where Louis’s fingers had been tangled in them earlier during their post-show hug.
“Should we wake them?” Liam asked, though he made no move to do so.
“Absolutely not,” Zayn said. “This is prime blackmail material. And also, remember how Louis is really ticklish?”
Niall’s eyes lit up with mischief. “You thinking what I’m thinking?”
A few moments later, the three of them were crouched near the couch like idiots, trying (and failing) to hold in their laughter. Niall reached out first, gently poking Louis in the side. When there was no reaction, he got bolder — scribbling his fingers lightly along Louis’s ribs.
Louis twitched.
A small, sleepy squirm. His nose scrunched up and he made a soft, disgruntled noise against Harry’s neck, but didn’t wake. Encouraged, Niall tickled him again, this time under his arm. Louis jerked harder, hips shifting, legs tightening around Harry’s thigh as he tried to escape the sensation in his sleep.
Harry stirred slightly but didn’t open his eyes. Instead, his body moved on pure instinct. With a low, sleepy hum, he rolled them smoothly — careful even unconscious — so Louis was now tucked securely between him and the back of the couch. Harry’s longer frame curled around Louis protectively, one leg thrown over both of Louis’s, arms wrapping him up in a tight, full-body hug. His face pressed into Louis’s hair again as he let out a contented sigh, holding him even closer than before.
The three boys watching lost it — quietly, but completely.
“Oh my gosh,” Liam whispered, hand over his mouth, eyes shining with laughter and fondness. “Did you see that? He just scooped him up without even waking up.”
Zayn was already pulling out his phone, snapping pictures as fast as he could. “This is golden. Look at Louis’s face — he’s smiling in his sleep now.”
Niall leaned in closer, taking a few photos from a different angle. “Harry’s literally got him in a death cuddle. Louis’s not escaping that anytime soon.”
They took turns getting closer — photos of Louis’s face smushed against Harry’s chest, Harry’s big hand spanning almost the entire width of Louis’s back, their legs completely tangled together.
“They’re going to kill us when they see these,” Liam said, but he was grinning ear to ear as he took one last photo.
“Worth it,” Zayn replied, scrolling through the pictures with a soft smile. “This is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. Our little husbands.”
Niall cackled quietly. “Can’t wait to show them in the morning. ‘Morning, lovebirds! Sleep well?’"
They dissolved into quiet cackles but eventually settled back, still stealing glances at the sleeping pair every few minutes. The room grew quieter as the night wore on, the adrenaline of the show finally giving way to proper exhaustion for all of them.
But none of the three could stop smiling.
Because no matter how chaotic, tiring, or overwhelming their lives had become, moments like this — Harry and Louis unconsciously reaching for each other, fitting together like puzzle pieces even in sleep — reminded them of something important.
They were a family.
And some things were just too sweet to ever make fun of completely.
The next morning, the group chat exploded with photos.
Louis’s indignant shouting and Harry’s dramatic, dimpled whining could be heard down the entire hotel corridor.
But later, when no one else was looking, Louis saved every single picture to a hidden folder on his phone.
Harry did the same.
