Victor had just about given up hope, when they stumbled across a bush of roses. Nova looked defeated, but his face broke out in a grin.
“They taste sweet.” He promised, plucking a delicate rose petal from the bud. Nova shyly parted her lips, and he placed the red petal on her pink tongue.
His chest tightened as he reminisced on memories, summers spent in his Mom’s garden. ‘If you’re ever missing me, baby, just look for a rosebush, and put one of them on your tongue.’
Victor’s chest ached, and he shakily put one of the petals between his cracked, dry lips. It was sweet, floraly. Smelled just like his Mom, and her beloved roses. Vera sank to her knees by him, gently eating one of the petals as well.
A quiet tear pricked in the corner of his eyes, rolling down his burning, smudged cheek. ‘Roses are edible. They’re like nature's dessert. Sweet, a satisfying snap, and surprising amounts of nutrition.’
