in some universes, when he goes to that quirk doctor, his wants are crushed without remorse. sometimes, he’s left with a creeping uncertainty. sometimes, he decides he’ll be a hero anyways, without any quirk to speak of.
sometimes, such as in this universe, a mundane miracle happens: izuku midoriya gets that quirk.

from there, his paths always diverge into chaos, hindering on two factors:
one, what izukus quirk is, and does;
and two, how izukus quirk is perceived and received.
in this universe, izuku midoriya’s quirk is quite simple: he can communicate between worlds.
(the adults see him mumbling to himself and scoff. really, what can such a quirk really do? unseen, unheard, to all but it’s owner. creepy, is what it was; yes, izuku smiled at nothing and babbled on to no one. the adults sneered and kept away, bitter words flung softly at the child.
and kids pick up beliefs from adults, trusted authority figure like teachers and parents, examples of what’s wrong, what’s right. and kids are always far more cruel, in less subtle ways, able to get away with far worse.)

For someone with such a massive ego, he always seemed so surprised when people were nice to him. Not that he showed it like this normally, but Bill had been learning to read him over the past couple years, and he was such a mess of contradictions.
Bill thought about that, because she’d tried to think about the implication behind four billion years of torture and lost herself in the scope of it. Then she’d tried to think about the implications of four years of torture, and then four months, to try to put it in perspective for her puny human mind, and then she’d wanted to throw up. So instead she thought about the Doctor’s ego, and how he didn’t like hugs.
