Mebuki writhed against the dirty tiled floor, cursing and spitting at the shinobi’s feet as they retreated. The other villagers averted their gazes. Only the captain lingered, his silhouette swallowing up the light of the passage outside the bunker as another wail rose in her throat.
“My baby girl! That’s my baby girl! Please let me go with her, my daughter, please I-”
The captain knelt and pressed his fingertips to her forehead, tilting her head back so that she was forced to meet his cold, dark eyes. Tears ran down the bridge of her nose, wetting the smudges of dirt clinging to her cheeks.
He blinked and his eyes changed in an instant to a deep, bloody red. Black flecks swirled in his irises, dancing around his pupil in a circular motion. The sobs died in her throat. Even the hum of panic dulled in her veins. She fell still, entranced.
“You must be confused,” he murmured. “You don’t have a daughter.”

Sasuke touched his index and ring fingers to the lilac diamond in the center of Sakura's forehead, resolved. He pushed his breathing to calm down, and the corners of his vision—darkened by lack of oxygen—slowly became clear again.
He concentrated on the warm feeling inside her, on the warmth of Naruto and Kakashi's chakra, and on the pulsing in his left eye, and at last Sasuke allowed himself to agree with the voice that had been roaring in his ears nonstop.
“No.”
He was not going to accept a damn thing of what had just happened.
Only Sakura's promise from before she was put under a genjutsu made sense.
Everything should be as it was before.
The sealing mark on Sakura's forehead lit up like a beacon through his fingers, as the scenery around them erupted in colors like a kaleidoscope.
“I will see you soon.”
Sasuke activated Izanagi.

She thought herself to be a good judge of character– the trick was really taking a clear look at someone’s face. People’s faces seldom betrayed their true nature– eventually, someone who was cruel and lips would turn downward, and their eyes would fill with an inky, impenetrable darkness. Itadori wasn’t like that– if she could think of an object which he reminded her of, it would be one of those children's bouncy castles. He was light. Like if a rubber ball or a helium balloon had made a wish to become human. She’d felt bad for kicking him, though he had called her a bitch, but that hadn’t excused her foul mood. He wasn’t a bad kid; in fact, he was a good kid, really good. A kid who had been caught in a web of madness. One day he was there, and the next he was gone, as if a wave had swept the shore and carried him out to sea.

He arched an eyebrow at her, a challenge flickering in his eyes. "Actually, it’s something I’ve noticed you’re better at than me."
