That was enough.Which is why, every time a teacher in Jackson riled them all up about some out-of-the-walls road trip or even a school activity that was off the clock, only to demand their parent’s written authorization first, Ellie sucked it up and went home in silence.

Joel couldn’t have kept his eyes from rolling if he tried, which he didn’t, but he did relax his shoulders just the smallest bit, shrinking on himself to appear as harmless as he could pass for.
“You’re in my way. The hell you doin’ out here still? It’s past bedtime for you brats, ain't it?.”
“Fuck off, I'm waiting for you to get out of my way.”
“Road large enough for the two of us, I reckon.”
His answer came in the form of a middle finger.

It's just when Tommy finally takes a look at tiny Sarah, with her ugly and scrunched up face and patch of hair and fragile body, that he understands Joel and all those selfless sacrifices and days of self starvation and pains shouldered without any complain for his sake.
He finally understands, because just like Joel had become an older brother once, and a father later, Tommy had turned into something too.
An uncle.
He was an uncle, and that girl was his niece.
His fragile, ugly and tiny and incredible miracle.

"Successfully stole,” Din corrected flatly. His brows knitted beneath his helmet. “From me. Without me noticing."

Din's time on Nevarro was supposed to be brief; he just needed to collect for his bounties, check in on Cara, and repair his ship.But now he was in this mess. A little smart-mouthed chakaar with his payment.
And you know what he doesn't need? Yet another kid to care about.
Too bad Grogu has other plans.

He'd had one similar in their Covert on Navarro, he and Din had found it.
It gives Paz somewhere to sit and think.

The door opens behind them and slams shut. Leia storms in, giving Luke a dark look.
“Do you know how much work it’s going to take to find that guy?” she says. “You didn’t get a name, Luke, and even if you had, Mandalorians don’t have names. You can’t just go around asking after the Mandalorian.”
“Grogu can tell me about him.” Sort of. He doesn’t get exact words from Grogu so much as feelings and impressions. Right now he gets the feeling of lightness from where he’s sleeping on Han and Leia’s couch, so it must be a good dream. “I know he’s a bounty hunter.”
“Well, that’s just great.” Leia folds her arms. “We’ll just go around and knock on every bounty hunter’s door and say excuse me, have you seen a metal man? We don’t know how tall he is or anything else about him, but my brother here has described him effectively as ‘shiny’.”
Luke didn't actually tell Din everything he needed to know when he found Grogu. Han works to remedy that.

As he pulled his hands away, Ellie stirred slightly. She rolled over, instinctively seeking the warmth, and rested her head heavily in his lap.
Joel froze. Every protective wall he had built over the last two decades told him to move. But he didn’t move. He looked down at her small face, completely peaceful in sleep, and he found that he didn’t mind the weight of her head on his thigh.
The whiskey fuzz had been gone for hours. He was completely, painfully sober. As the clock on the desk quietly ticked past midnight, signaling the start of September 26th, a heavy realization settled over him. For the first time in twenty years, Joel wasn’t sitting alone in a dark room, getting filthy drunk. He was sober and keeping a little girl safe.
TLDR: Joel is a FEDRA officer. Twenty years of apocalypse have made him cold-blooded. He's supposed to be cruel. But he crosses paths with a "troubled" eight-year-old girl who changes him for the better.
