The easy answer would be ‘because you can’ or ‘because you like hurting me, you absolute bastard man’, and both are technically correct, but he knows that’s not the answer Ghost is looking for. He gives up with a bit of a pout as he looks up for clarity and shakes his head.
“Because this–” Ghost digs the tip of his gloved thumb into the forming welt on Soap’s cheek and smiles at the little whine it garners, “is mine. Your pain, your fear, it belongs to me, not a dead man, and certainly not every grunt with a gun. They don’t deserve to have that part of you. Do you understand, love?”
