They were alone again as Ashley detoured into the common area, most likely for the last time in days, leaving them near the kitchens. As Kaidan moved towards the drawers Amelia stuck to his side. Ashley would be a few minutes yet. After all, Amelia was a romantic now. She had to act the part. And by this point, she had to admit, it wasn’t an act anymore. Amelia loved her best friends, the first she’d ever truly had, and beyond that she had Kaidan. She had family.

She couldn’t do this without her team. They were what got her through working with Cerberus. The late-night talks with Garrus, Miranda carving out time to help her recover both physically and mentally, Chakwas and Joker making it their goal to ensure she never fell into the addictions tempting her around every bend. She couldn’t fight a hopeless war with no support. She could barely grasp her current situation. Stuck on Earth, the Normandy unable to return, surrounded by strangers, her father behind her always and Kaidan a constant reminder of everything she lost two years ago and fought so hard to regain fruitlessly ever since.
But no one else would fight this war. She was Commander fucking Shepard. Commander Shepard fights Reapers. Commander Shepard doesn’t complain. Leads the best of the galaxy. Does the impossible with a set jaw and a cheeky one-liner from her friends. Commander Shepard saves the day because that’s what heroes do. She was so sick of always having to be the hero, but the galaxy still had need of heroes. Time to be Commander Shepard again.

Layla wanted a small ceremony. No one had time for an extravagant party, the credits were better spent elsewhere, the two of them wanted something small from the start... No matter how many times she made her excuses, Layla’s friends and crewmates insisted on doing something. So she found herself trapped in her cabin aboard the Normandy, held hostage by Miranda, trying and failing to talk her way out of whatever they had planned.

Summary
The girl in question was led to believe she was gone and no one cared enough to find her. It was step one in breaking down her psyche and rebuilding her as a seasoned killer capable of carrying out the Illusive Man’s dirty work.
Step two was to beat the rebellion out of her, for once she realized she was on her own she decided to fight her own way out.
The Illusive Man knew what he was doing; Cerberus needed a specialist to do their dirty work, and despite the training and the setbacks the girl would become great. That was step three.
Step four took the longest. She had to become completely, unwaveringly loyal to Cerberus. She had to take on the best alone, all the way to Commander Shepard if need be. Months of breaking her down, building her up just enough, and knocking her down again. It took far too long, but eventually the girl was exactly what the Illusive Man wanted. Not stripped completely of everything she was, but enough to act out his will.
Step five was unleashing her on the galaxy. Step five was their downfall.

Saving the galaxy is never easy, and the road to recovery afterwards is never easy. Pandora Shepard is living the consequences of defeating the Reapers. The consequences are great, but the recovery is greater thanks to the same people who made it necessary in the first place: the people who've been there all along. Sequel to What Time Cannot Heal.

"Stay with me, Leon," Chris says loudly, nudging Leon's head where it's fallen to rest against the juncture of their shoulders. "We're gonna make it out, but I need you to stay awake with me."
He sounds grim. That's never a good sign, but Leon's focusing too much on the jelly his knees have turned into to give it much thought. Ashley slumps to the side, unconscious, and Luis feels relief as the computer chimes pleasantly, confirming the absence of the parasite. He glances up at Leon, who looks between Luis and Ashley with a faint smile of boyish triumph that Luis can’t help but find endearing.
A split-second later, Leon’s eyes roll up into his head and he collapses, the Kevlar of his vest clicking against the metal grating.

It's not clear how conscious his actions are so we will proceed with caution and monitor activities carefully.
