Ashley would be a few minutes yet. After all, Amelia was a romantic now. She had to act the part. And by this point, she had to admit, it wasn’t an act anymore. Amelia loved her best friends, the first she’d ever truly had, and beyond that she had Kaidan. She had family.

The late-night talks with Garrus, Miranda carving out time to help her recover both physically and mentally, Chakwas and Joker making it their goal to ensure she never fell into the addictions tempting her around every bend. She couldn’t fight a hopeless war with no support. She could barely grasp her current situation. Stuck on Earth, the Normandy unable to return, surrounded by strangers, her father behind her always and Kaidan a constant reminder of everything she lost two years ago and fought so hard to regain fruitlessly ever since.
But no one else would fight this war. She was Commander fucking Shepard. Commander Shepard fights Reapers. Commander Shepard doesn’t complain. Leads the best of the galaxy. Does the impossible with a set jaw and a cheeky one-liner from her friends. Commander Shepard saves the day because that’s what heroes do. She was so sick of always having to be the hero, but the galaxy still had need of heroes. Time to be Commander Shepard again.

The girl in question was led to believe she was gone and no one cared enough to find her. It was step one in breaking down her psyche and rebuilding her as a seasoned killer capable of carrying out the Illusive Man’s dirty work.
Step two was to beat the rebellion out of her, for once she realized she was on her own she decided to fight her own way out.
The Illusive Man knew what he was doing; Cerberus needed a specialist to do their dirty work, and despite the training and the setbacks the girl would become great. That was step three.
Step four took the longest. She had to become completely, unwaveringly loyal to Cerberus. She had to take on the best alone, all the way to Commander Shepard if need be. Months of breaking her down, building her up just enough, and knocking her down again. It took far too long, but eventually the girl was exactly what the Illusive Man wanted. Not stripped completely of everything she was, but enough to act out his will.
Step five was unleashing her on the galaxy. Step five was their downfall.

Saving the galaxy is never easy, and the road to recovery afterwards is never easy. Pandora Shepard is living the consequences of defeating the Reapers. The consequences are great, but the recovery is greater thanks to the same people who made it necessary in the first place: the people who've been there all along. Sequel to What Time Cannot Heal.
