    “Where are you going?”

“To the arena, Hollander. We are playing a game in three hours.”

“That’s tomorrow, Rozanov,” Hollander says, smirking like Ilya might be fucking with him and he wants to make sure he’s in on the joke. He looks behind and around him. “Um, can I come inside?”

“Hollander, we have game today. You were here yesterday.”

Hollander is striding toward his kitchen, looking over his shoulder at Ilya like he’s getting tired of the joke. “Very funny. I was in Montreal yesterday, Rozanov.”

“Hollander.” Ilya goes to stand in front of him. Hollander’s eyes flicker up and down his body the way that Ilya usually craves, but is rather unwelcome right now. “Today is Thursday. Game is today. Yesterday, you came to my house. We ate tuna melts, watched Buffalo game. Then, you left.”

“Rozanov, it’s Wednesday morning. And I’ve never been to your house before.”

    “Hollander…”

“Look at your phone if you don’t believe me.”

Ilya snorts like a bull and pulls his phone out of his pocket, swipes down on the screen to look at the date.

    Wednesday, November 9th.

When he finally looked at Shane again, Shane knew exactly what he was going to escape his mouth.

“Don’t,” Shane croaked. “Please don’t say it.”

Ilya sighed, “Sweethe—Shane. This… I should not have done that. That was a mistake.”

Rejection washed over Shane, a dirty and miserable feeling.

“You steal my Centaurs shirt, eh?” Ilya says.

Shane stills and sends him a confused look, “What Centaurs shirt? Like the Ottawa Centaurs?”

“Yeah, asshole. The team I play for.”

Shane laughs, nearly guffaws. “Yeah, and I play for the Metros.”

    “...Yes?”

Shane turns and hands Ilya a mug of hot coffee with a waving bagel printed on the front. He presses a kiss to Ilya’s ear before saying, “Drink up. I think you need some caffeine.”

Instead of driving to Ottawa to start life on his new team, Ilya wakes up in Montreal in a new reality. He isn't famous. Shane isn't famous. But they're still in love, and now Ilya has the chance to live out all of his boring boyfriend wildest dreams.

    Summary

After I retold the television show Heated Rivalry from the point of view of Ilya Rozanov, my brain decided I needed to write the exact same thing, but from the point of view of Shane Hollander, so I not only did I need to match the show, but also my own prior work. WHEE!

So that's what this is: a novelization of the television show that is ALSO a companion piece to Bad Thing.

I did read both Heated Rivalry and The Long Game by Rachel Reid, but that was some time ago and my recollection of them is spotty at best. Because they are novels, I did NOT consult the books in order to reduce the chance that I would inadvertently plagiarize them. So where the television series leaves a gap in the narrative, I may fill it with something very different than what happens in the books. We will all end up at the cottage, but some of us are taking a slightly different path to get there.

This novelization means that potentially triggering things that happen in the series (like mental health issues) will happen in this work. NOTE, HOWEVER, no new issues will be added in this work. No one dies. No one is outed. No one is assaulted. This is just the story of the show as if it were from Shane's point of view.

The best way to describe this work, I think, is as a novelization of the television series told from Ilya Rozanov's point of view. What happens in the series will happen, more or less, in this work.

Because they are novels and this is a written story, I did NOT consult the books in order to reduce the chance that I would inadvertently plagiarize them. That means that where the television series leaves a gap in the narrative, I may fill it with something very different than what happens in the books. We will all end up at the cottage, but some of us are taking a slightly different path to get there.
