Summary

Summary
A formerly brilliant doctoral student and currently mediocre bookshop owner, Bilbo Baggins is quite happy to live in the quiet obscurity of his distant hometown of Hobbiton, his dreams of uncovering the history of Middle-Earth locked away in ruins and ancient manuscripts all but forgotten.
He's happy until one day a colleague of Thorin Oakenshield, a battle-wearied campaigner for dwarvish civil rights determined to uncover the true story of his people, invites him to join a dangerous and illegal excavation in the ruins of Erebor. What Thorin and Bilbo uncover about the ancient history of a now impoverished and culturally destitute people, about the efforts undergone to conceal it, and about their own troubled lives, have consequences for the past, present and future that neither of them could have ever imagined.

Now you have destroyed both it and the dragon in one fell swoop! And that’s all well and good for Thorin Oakenshield and his Company. But an act of destruction like that means the Lord of Darkness who willed that ring into being will have noticed, and like as not, he’s amassing his army as we speak. All of Gondor may have fallen before I’ve so much as caught sight of Osgiliath!”
“…I didn’t mean any harm,” said Bilbo. He managed to sound both mulish and heartbroken in the same breath.

Thorin took another step forward, and once again looked at Bilbo, who hadn't moved an inch, "So, this is our man. Tell me, Mr. Baggins, you done much fighting?"
"Excuse me?" Bilbo was thrown, both by being referred by this stranger as his man, and by the ridiculous question. Fighting? Why, he was a respectable gentleman! Not some ruffian who was prone to getting into scraps.
"Revolver? Rifle? What's your weapon of choice?" Thorin probed, his voice was rich and sonorous, but tinged with a bit of amusement that rankled at Bilbo's pride.
"Well, I'm a deft hand at whist, if you must know, but I fail to see why that's relevant." Bilbo replied, with a snippy tone and a mite more confidence than he felt at the moment.
