Summary
Princess Sally, called home from her schooling by her dismissive father, wants nothing more than to discover why the fish her kingdom relies on for their livelihood have been disappearing, before her father writes the kingdom off as a lost cause.
Shadow is brought to the Acorn Kingdom with his adoptive sister, Maria, by her grandfather after funding for research into Maria's illness is cut off, but coming to the tiny seaside Acorn Kingdom brings with it the unraveling of a greater secret.
Sonic knows his people and the Acorn Kingdom haven't worked together in many generations, but that doesn't stop him from exploring the tiny kingdom, or wishing for better for everyone, or from making new friends.
And through it all, Sally, Shadow, and Sonic discover they may be able to help each other more than they realize.

Inspirations include Diana Wynne Jones (Howl's Moving Castle), Catherynne Valente (The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of her own Making) and Ursula Vernon/T. Kingfisher (A Sorceress Come to Call).
