    Summary

Erik had heard stories about what happened when a rooster laid an egg - if he was allowed to hatch it a basilisk would emerge.
Fed with poison and blood it would grow into a powerful monster and bring disaster wherever it went: plants were scorched by its breath alone, stones would burst by a mere look.
Erik regarded his lord and realized what he had known since the day the man had pulled him from the ashes of his home: he was to be shaped in his image and Erik would kill him for it.

    Summary

There was no good word for what Istvan was to Erik. He'd been the end of one life and the start of another. He'd provided for him, taught him, molded him. They were alike, but not the same.

He might have remained caught, unsure if he wanted to be Istvan or be with Istvan, had Istvan not left him behind to go on crusade and in his absence, left Erik's feelings to grow into something uncontrollable.

A collection of scenes from 1391-1399.

    Summary

“Penumbra (n.) a part of a shadow where the light is not wholly gone, used especially of the half-shadow cast during an eclipse.”

Evil does not reproduce; it perfects itself. And the Lord does not halt wheels that men themselves insist on turning.

Some would argue whether Henry pushed or István leapt. But they should note, perhaps, that God kept His silence as ever.

This work is a large-scale István Tóth bildungsroman covering 1372–1403 and is intended as a hypothetical prequel to his main KCD narrative.
