Summary
Set in 1300s France.
Sir Michael Robinavitch is a knight edging into old age. After serving various lords and kings as a knight-for-hire for the last 35 years, during which time he’s committed horrific (sanctioned) crimes, he’s crippled by the fear of dying unforgiven. He’s tried to do his best to help those he could along the way and minimize the damage, but he’s haunted by all the faces of those he couldn’t save.
Jack Abbot is a faithless man of the faith. He no longer believes in God but he believes in his ability to help share the burden of other people’s grief, even as it drives him closer to the edge. As the sole survivor of his monastery after the plague sweeps through it, he’s white-knuckling each day, clinging to the tenants (including his vow of chastity) handed down by a God he’s sure has abandoned all of humanity, if he ever existed in the first place.
When Robinavitch is delivered to Abbot by an act of God, Abbot tends to him and takes his confession, not knowing whether Robby’s sins will finally push him over the edge—or pull him back into safety.

Summary
One year after the first plague wave nearly destroyed Ba Sing Se, the city begins to breathe again. The bells slow. The death carts lighten. Survivors cautiously reopen markets and homes while Khione, Katara, Sokka, Aang, Toph, and the Dai Li continue patrols beneath the shadow of lingering infection.
But the peace is temporary.
When coughing returns to Stoneflower Market, Khione realizes the plague has evolved. The second wave spreads not through explosive collapse, but through breath, contact, and routine. Pneumonic plague moves quietly through reopened streets, delivery routes, crowded homes, and hidden carriers. The city does not fall into chaos this time. Instead, Ba Sing Se enters a long war of detection, isolation, and endurance. As months pass, the plague doctors become a permanent part of the city. The Dai Li transform from secret police into containment wardens. Sokka builds tracking systems. Katara learns to heal within impossible limits. And Khione becomes known across the city as its doctor.
By the end of the year, the plague has not vanished. But Ba Sing Se has learned how to survive it.

However, not all of the Romulan survivors support the reunification efforts, and if the recent terrorist attack on Starbase 157 is anything to go by…not all of the Romulan survivors support peace between Terrans and what remains of the once-great Romulan Empire.
