Summary
Every new year hundreds receive a death sentence in the form of a black skull mark on their arm. Some spend their last days seeking pleasure. Others fall into despair as if they were dead already. Some try to right their wrongs. Kaz Brekker welcomes any of them into the Dregs so long as they have a useful talent.
Some rumors claim, he keeps their hearts in jars. He delights in tormenting them, others whisper. He made a deal with the devil for their souls, others are convinced. Whatever the reason, one thing is known: Kaz Brekker only hires those who are already dying. Kaz lets the rumors go because they are useful and because they are all less horrific than what he actually is.

Based on this writing prompt:
There is a beautiful statue of a person in the middle of a large city, and the rumor surrounding the statue is that when they touch hands with their soulmate, they will become human. Naturally, it becomes a perfect photo and video opportunity to pose while holding its hand.
One cute selfie attempt results in an empty statue podium and you just barely catching a very confused person in your arms.
Bonus points if the current bf/gf is taking the pictureExcept make it Kazolai because it’s me, and you should expect nothing less at this point :)

Inej Ghafa has just returned to Ketterdam University after taking an unexpected semester off. Kaz Brekker defends her at a party and accidentally reveals their relationship to everyone in attendance. The only problem: they aren't actually in a relationship.

“I don’t care where it was! What are you doing?”
“I thought I wasn’t supposed to involve you in my schemes anymore.” said Kaz petulantly, glancing in the mirror to rearrange his jacket.
“Kaz, you playing the victim is about as natural as a flock of lime-green flamingos, so don’t bother,” said Jesper. “Is it a heist? A blackmail job? Gathering information?”
“Who said it was just one thing?” said Kaz, straightening his cuffs with two brisk jerks. “This place is the playground for the children of the rich and prosperous, Jes. I could have a million reasons for being here. But since you’re here for reasons both honest and respectable, I can assure you I’ll stay out of your way–”

Nina still wasn't sure exactly what she thought about the place. She had looked it up, of course, but that hadn't helped. Some people had lamented about the worst customer service ever, some had talked about how the café was undoubtedly a secret hideout for criminals or just used for money laundering, some had complained that the barista was just a bad person and everyone else was stupid, a few had called the barista handsome and mysterious, some had criticized the decor ... but absolutely everyone had agreed that the Crow's Nest served the best coffee in town, maybe even the best in the country.
Nina had no idea why she had decided that this, of all places, was the right place for her to start over.

Perhaps lying — more than bomb-making or flute-playing or drawing blueprints of Fjerdan fortresses — was his greatest skill. After all, he had plenty of practice at it, both before and after he’d started… whatever this was with Kaz.
A gloved hand snaked its way into his hair, effectively cutting off his train of thought.
OR: Kaz and Wylan get together, and then they fall apart.

His heart and the crashing of the waves were in sync - steady and calming.
