Summary
“Buck, do you have some chapstick? I left mine at home.” Eddie watches Buck pause in her conversation with Maddie, brows furrowing and lips pursing as she thinks before turning and frowning.
“Not on me, sorry, Eds. It’s in the car but here.”
Buck leans over, and before Eddie can wonder what she’s doing, Buck has her hand cradling the back of Eddie’s neck and is pressing her lips to Eddie’s in a long, lingering kiss. Well, an almost facsimile of a kiss; it’s more like Buck rubbing her lips against Eddie’s. Her lips are warm and absurdly soft, her grip steady and grounding and— Eddie’s train of thought vanishes. All she can register is just Buck, a mantra BuckBuckBuck, and then it’s over. The feel of Buck, the slight taste of her chapstick choice of the day— mint. Eddie is left reeling, trying to grasp at a shred of brain capacity when Buck moves back out of Eddie’s orbit with a small private smile and then turns away.

That seems almost too informal to capture the complicated mess of emotions involved in starting this email. How do you say hello to your (former?) best friend of 7 years who fundamentally changed you after almost 5 years of silence? I definitely don't know. So I'll start with hi. And I'm sorry. I'm sorry I let the silence stretch out. I'm sorry I let the gap between us widen. I'm sorry I let time slip by. It was days before I realized I hadn't replied your texts or answered your calls. And I let it turn into weeks, months, years. I don't want the silence to have lasted longer than our friendship.

Summary
The idea comes to him on one of his drives through the mountains.
He’s driving up, and up, and up until the road has a steep, sheer drop on one side, and nobody’s driving alongside him. He’s headed to the top of a mountain. There’s a gravel pull-off right before a hairpin turn. The turn is protected by a flimsy guardrail.
Eddie parks on the pull-off and walks over to look past the guardrail.
Nothing underneath. Just dry underbrush. A shallow stream right at the bottom. Thin vegetation. If a car missed the curve at a fair speed, it would plummet down the cliff. Next to no chance of survival.
And Eddie’s known to drive, to clear his own head. He used to do it to find hiking trails for him and Buck, or roadside attractions or activities that Christopher might like. It’s a known hobby of his. He’s a good driver.
So it’s not convincing if he crashes in good weather. He’ll have to wait for a storm.
But it’ll work. It has to work.

“Mind your business,” Eddie laughed, leaning forward and flicking Christopher’s forehead with her free hand. “I don’t even need to hold her hand, Buck would follow me around anyway.”
Buck’s mouth twitches.
Because, yeah, she was right. Buck would happily follow Eddie anywhere, with or without the handholding. She would follow her off the edge of the earth if it meant she got to spend a little more time with her. Dr Copeland would probably say that she has unhealthy attachment issues; Buck likes to think that she’s just a girl in love.
Buck loves her best friend a disgusting amount. It’s a good thing Eddie loves her just as much.

“But that’d make me– uh.”
Buck doesn’t finish Eddie’s sentence for her, even though she can feel Eddie’s wide, brown eyes begging her to. She waits. Patient. Like Eddie would for her. She thinks being loved by Eddie has made her a better person.
And like Buck knew she would, because she’s the bravest person Buck’s ever had the honour of knowing, Eddie finishes and grinds out a quiet, “It’d make me gay. To want that.”
Buck nods. “Yeah.”
Eddie blinks, expression twisting like she’s fighting the wetness in her eyes.
“Buck.” There’s a warning edge to her tone.
Buck doesn’t back down — doesn’t really know how to. The question isn’t meant to be invasive; she just thinks maybe no one has ever asked Eddie before. No one ever asked Buck if she was into girls, and it probably would’ve sped the process up a little. Softly, she asks, “Are you?”
“No.” The answer is sharp, harsh and instant. It’s such a hard shutdown — like Eddie’s thought about it, and knows to reject it. Or has taught herself to. “I can’t be.”
Or: Someone leaves first. There’s no other version of this story. But sometimes, they come back, too.

Eddie Diaz is on what is possibly the worst date of all time. A tall blue eyed stranger saves him from his predicament.

Eddie's about to stand up from the table—to simply get the hell out of there, and wait on his Uber out of sight—when something unexpected happens. His people-watching-subject is now approaching the table, no longer sat at the bar.
"What the hell?" The man's piercing blue eyes are fixed on him.
Eddie goes tense, a nervous laugh bubbling out of him. He catches the mischievous quirk of the other mans mouth though and isn't sure what he's in for.
"And who the hell is this?" Blue Eyes whips around to face Eddie's date, eyebrow set in a firm line. Eddie wonders if he's a model or something in his free time. This was LA after all. Eddie makes a mental note to ask him if he's a model.
"E-ethan?"
"Are you sure about that E-e-ethan?" Blue-Eye's crowds into his area and sticks a finger in his chest.

“Oh no, we’re not doing this.” Chimney pops a bubble with the gum he’s been chewing as he moves one of his fingers back and forth to point between The-Man-who-isn’t-Buck’s-man-he’s-just-The-Man and Buck. “You didn’t drag me to the gym just so you can ditch me to fuck some guy in the showers."
Buck lowers his voice, leaning forward as if trying to make the words’s journey shorter between him and Chimney so they can’t escape and reach anyone else’s ears,“I wouldn’t fuck him in the showers.”
Chimney’s response is wordless in the form of an eyebrow raise.
“Not anymore, okay?” Buck clarifies, rolling his eyes. “That’s not who I am now."
(spoiler alert: Buck does fuck the guy in the showers. but that comes after nicknaming him Big Beautiful Brown Eyes, finding out his name is actually Eddie, becoming his best friend, and falling madly in love with him.)

"Don't you have a fire to contain?" Eddie grumbled into his hands.
"My team's got it."
Eddie looked up with narrowed eyes. He had to anyway, what with Buck being backlit by the sun as he was. "What are they even paying you for?"
"Looking pretty, obviously." He swung his axe over his shoulder with a wink.
Eddie was sure he had brought it over just for that exact purpose. Why else would he need it?
He had to admit, though... He looked good with it. He always looked good, but something about his arms, and the pink of his cheeks, and his glittering eyes, practically sparkling in the sun with laughter, and the uniform certainly helped -
Eddie cleared his throat, wanting to come off as cool. And not let on the fact that he was getting lost in fantasies about hot firefighters with adorable pink splotches on their faces. "Wow. Glad to know my tax dollars are being well spent."
Buck laughed, head thrown back with it and everything. Eddie didn't think he was that funny, but Buck always made him feel like he was a comedic genius.
OR: Eddie really needs to stop setting his kitchen on fire. At least he gets a hot firefighter out of it.

While unpacking, Eddie finds love letters, written by Buck over the years to his “only love”. Heartbroken, Eddie sneaks out and leaves without a word, taking the letters with him.
Buck has to try and fix this if he doesn’t want to lose his “only love” forever.

He does the same. Buries the paper in the soft soil of his backyard and comes back running to his house, to his childhood bed. He falls asleep still wishing for someone to hear him. He doesn't want to be alone anymore.Buck is thirty-four years old, still waiting for his wish to be granted.
And he's in love with his best friend. And his best friend has a boyfriend.

Eddie moves before Buck can blink—one smooth, unhesitating motion. His hands find Buck’s waist first, then slide lower, bracing under his thighs as he lifts. The world tilts, and for a second Buck feels weightless, the heat of Eddie’s palms searing through denim, the strength behind it dizzying against Buck’s already crumbling composure.
Then the counter meets him—cool beneath his thighs even through the fabric—Eddie’s hands leaving heat in their wake like a brand. Eddie’s still standing close enough that Buck’s knees frame him, not backing away immediately. His breath grazes Buck’s chest, eyes flicking up, the space between them charged with something that makes every cell in Buck’s body scream more, more, more.
“Now sit,” Eddie says firmly, hands still resting under Buck’s legs before he finally backs away. “Stay.”
