Summary
Disoriented, lost and angry he forced himself back on his feet. His limbs felt heavy, but not unwieldy. The hardest part was lifting his eyes, stubbornly stuck on the crumbling shape of what was left of the calcifying beast. Come on man, get a grip on yourself. The team needs you.
With no warning his gaze snapped upwards, past the cracks in the ceiling. Chris held his breath, as if it would really matter what his eyes would find.
And yet, the most twisted thing was how it still broke him. Past his blurry vision, through the ashen spores settling down, and the snow still finding its way into the depths of the earth, in the cold blue halo of the night, there it fucking was - his ghost.
(...)
His heart was back in his throat - that wretched traitor.
He had to know.
His voice broke, barely above a whisper, betraying any thread of logic he should have been holding onto instead.“Piers?”

Summary
Paul and Glenn both knew it was a bad idea. Risking a trip into the city for supplies without backup was never a good idea, no matter what the intentions behind it. things always have to get a little worse before they can hope to get better.
--
“We’re surrounded,” Glenn said, stepping back inside the alley, pressing his back to the bricks.
There was a metallic sound, and they looked in unison towards the fence. One of the fasteners had burst. The pressure the walkers were putting against the chain link was tearing it free from the poles.
“Any ideas?” Paul asked, his eyes scanning the bare sides of the buildings around them. Not even a dumpster or a fire escape in sight.
Glenn let out a breath and, when Paul turned his attention towards him, Glenn’s gaze was fixed on the corpses spread out across the cement. “Not a good one.”
“I’ll take whatever you’ve got right now,” Paul said, the first traces of worry bleeding into his usually controlled voice.
Glenn tore his eyes away from the bodies to meet Paul’s eyes. “I’ve done this before. Once. It… isn’t an experience I ever wanted to relive.”
“As long as we get to live, right?”

Summary
A quiet winter's night, years after things have settled into the new world, Jesus and Daryl take their time, living the life they chose.
____The forest extended, dense and endless all around, offering them shelter for more than a decade now. By its grace, they still had a couple more left to offer, Paul thought, and when the time would come they’d return everything back, seep into the ground, allow nature to continue its course.
He never wondered when or how it would happen, never wondered if family or complete strangers would find their remains. But he hoped, when the time came, that it made no difference, because they would have left behind a place that told their story. That pieces of Daryl would linger long after they’re gone, that they’d find Paul’s threaded alongside his. That, much like the first time they’d found the cabin, whoever was going to step over its threshold, whoever was going to climb up to the very top of its watchtower, would be able to tell, without a doubt, that there had been love here once. That there had been devotion and care, that there had been hardship and effort, that they would be looking upon the remnants of a life worth living.

Summary
But then Paul just walked right up to it one day and stared it down, unshaken by the pathetic display of snarling and thrashing. And he took the fucking leash and patiently pulled, and started teaching it how not to bite, just 'cause he knew how. It started back at Sanctuary, with his left palm up to calm him down, while his right one stayed hidden, ready to strike if he snapped. Then it became a steady pattern when he was crashing down from his nightmares: left hand reaching out to comfort without touching, the other tucked away, tense, ready to hold him down. Occupying the space between his parted knees, only one hand tentatively on his chest, the other always lingering out of sight, until Daryl’s body would answer and relax under the touch.
Left hand up to sooth it, right hand prepared to tame.
Paul had recognized it for what it was and had never looked away, had never flinched since. Had never dismissed it and lowered his guard around it.‘You can’t hurt me, Daryl.’ He’d said that with a confidence that had felt downright arrogant, some old nights ago, in the silence before the war. Now, playing it back in his head, it sounded nothing more and nothing less than the raw truth.

Summary
A collection of moments, words, gestures, glances and touches. It might have crossed Varric's mind to get some fresh inspiration for a new novel but truth being told they made no good story. Sure, it was a story that everyone would have loved to hear but when he thought of words to put on paper, he couldn't decide on any. In order to write a story you need a strong beginning, a happy middle, and a memorable ending. They couldn't agree on a beginning, there was no middle way for either of them, and they would not accept an end. Theirs was a story they would rather keep to their longing fingers and their craving mouths.
