This has been sitting in my drafts folder for a long time, and after reading it over a few times, I haven't found any sufficiently satisfactory conclusion to it, in part because the central question appears to me to be unsolvable. This is the story of how the capes of Earth Bet's Seattle doomed their city to destruction and irrelevancy.
The story first follows Ian Strutt: a lazy, reluctant, newly triggered cape, who just wants an easygoing life. As a tinker with a specialization in acoustics, he does everything in his power to just be left alone.
This is an original story with original characters that takes place in the world of Earth-bet that Wildbow created, with few intentional deviations on details he just mentioned in passing. But it is intended to be able to be read by people who have not read Worm or don't even know anything about Worm.
Not intended to be an AU. Takes place in 2007 pre-canon. Do correct me if I get anything majorly wrong lore-wise. Not a self insert either. The content warning for Worm also applies here.
By the way, this is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual groups, locales, or events is purely coincidental.

The Control Devil had wished for many things and allowed herself none of them. She'd lived a life according to how she had been taught it should be lived.
She was a tool. Of course, other people were tools, as well. Any relationships were purely transactional, a means to use others.It would be a problem if she was someone who actually cared.
It is, of course, a problem for one very unfortunate person, waking up in exactly that absurd situation. With a carefully crafted façade for a life that she doesn't have the strength to uphold, and all the unecessary feelings of someone who cares about themselves- and about others. Everyone whose fate is in her hands, who would simply die if she gave the word.
But then, all told, perhaps it's a good situation.
