Summary
In the very recent days out on the sea their co-captain Gillion had revealed something personal about his triton biology to them. In an anxious, unexpected conversation he’d sheepishly admitted to them that tritons required a brief hibernation at least once a winter for them to maintain a healthy metabolic system.
Gillion described it almost like the way they sometimes restarted Alphonse’s gears if he was experiencing malfunctions, that it was a way for a triton’s body to shut down and restore balance to all of its internal functions and prepare for the summer months full of intense swimming and food-catching.
When he brought it up he seemed beyond embarrassed, mentioning that if he could he wouldn’t have told them in the first place as to not worry or inconvenience them but he didn’t want them to be frightened when he inevitably started sleeping and did not wake for potentially up to two weeks.

Further complications come in the form of three emotionally stunted co-captains not knowing how to deal with any of this, but they'll figure it out together.
With a little help from a sunburnt stranger they pull out of the ocean, of course. Because nothing on this godsdamned ship is allowed to make sense.

Because Gillion Tidestrider was attractive, and an incredible dancer, and Chip had been attending Jack&Jill dances like these for years, and not once had they been paired together. He’d dreamed of it, maybe. Not that it was something he’d ever admit aloud. He’d seen the way Gillion glides across the floor and twirls his partners. There's a sort of effortless energy about him, and it's electric. Chip had simply wanted to dance with the man for months now. Maybe even years, he wasn’t sure.
OR Chip and Gillion get paired at a dance event, and over the course of a year, Chip learns how fond he is for the domestic sort of life he finds himself settling into with Gillion and his daughter, Pretzel.
