Dream hadn't spoken a single word. Not a rasped thanks, not a whispered sorry, nothing. His voice had completely vanished, swallowed up by a depression so thick and suffocating it felt like a physical presence in the downstairs bedroom.
The blackout curtains remained pulled, locking the room in a permanent, rotting twilight. Dream barely moved. He lay on his side, his body curled tightly into a defensive ball, staring blankly at the beige paint of the wall. He stared for hours, his eyes wide and vacant, unblinking until they stung, completely detached from the passage of time.
Sapnap and George had stopped trying to maintain a normal routine; their lives had completely shrank down to the perimeter of the mattress. They took shifts. It was a silent, desperate relay race - one of them sitting on the edge of the bed or propped up against the headboard while the other hurriedly ate, showered, or pretended to handle work in their offices.

Spencer leaned his forehead against Aaron’s shoulder, a breathless laugh escaping him. “God, you’re insufferable.”
“And you,” Aaron countered, pulling back just enough to look at him with a gaze that made Spencer feel entirely seen, “Are going to be the death of me.”
They stood there for a beat longer than necessary, the domestic bliss of a Thursday night in a quiet house settling over them like a blanket. It was a fleeting, perfect moment of ‘us,’ and as Spencer turned back to the cutting board, the ring on his finger - the fake one, the prop, the shield - felt less like a piece of jewelry and more like a promise he wasn’t entirely sure he wanted to break.

“Baby,” Aaron murmured, his voice slurring heavily, his eyelids drooping as the anesthesia began to drag him back under. A small, contented sigh escaped him, and he tilted his head toward Spencer, nuzzling into the hand he was holding. “Thought… thought they took you… too.”

Spencer didn’t move. He didn’t pull his hand away, nor did he offer any explanation. He simply leaned forward, his face pale and unreadable, and let his fingers interlace with Aaron’s.
“I’m here,” Spencer said, his voice quiet but steady, cutting through the thick, suffocating silence of the room. “I’m not going anywhere. Go back to sleep, Aaron.”

“Let’s dial things up now,” Hotch’s smile was small, barely there, but it reached his eyes. “Tomorrow evening, at the precinct, I’m not going to bother sitting on the opposite side of the table during the briefing.”
Reid felt a flush creep up his neck, a thrill that had nothing to do with the case and everything to do with the man holding him. “The team is going to be incredibly confused,” he noted, though he was already leaning into Hotch’s touch.
“Let them be,” Hotch murmured, pulling Reid just a bit closer until space between them was non-existent. “It’s about time they start paying attention.”

For the first time in weeks, he asked both Dream and Sapnap to come lay down with him.
The daybed wasn't large - it wasn't meant for three grown men - but they made it work without a single complaint. Dream pulled his large computer chair up to the edge of the mattress, resting his arms and his head directly on the mattress beside George’s hip so their fingers could stay loosely intertwined. Sapnap climbed onto the foot of the bed, sitting upright with his back pressed securely against the wall, his legs stretched out to keep a protective guard over George's ankles.
Listening to the steady, synchronized breathing of his boyfriends, George stared up at the shadows on the ceiling. He thought that talking about it - forcing the truth out into the open in front of everyone - would have completely broken him. But as he felt the warmth of Dream’s hand and the solid weight of Sapnap at the edge of the bed, he realized it hadn't broken him at all. It had lifted a weight.
