Ilya ripped off his glove and pressed his palm to Shane’s cheek, and Shane gasped back to life just in time for the medics to shove Ilya out of the way.

Ilya is uncommonly desperate, and Shane is feeling very good about himself, knowing that Ilya is impressed by his four goals, even though he's going to pretend not to be. And Ilya is here, and things aren't weird, and he has a contract PR girlfriend and Ilya is going to think he's so normal and hooking up with girls and that he's not unreasonably attached to the fuckbuddy he barely ever gets to fuck. Everything has worked out so in Shane's favor that it's almost ridiculous

“Shane,” Ilya can’t hear the rest of the sentence. He thinks the rest of the sentence would haunt his nightmares for the rest of his life. “Stop it. It’s okay. I’m not upset. We can talk later, yes? You need to think about practice now. Meet the new rookies, give big Captain speech. I’ll still be here.” He can’t offer any other truths, so he offers this one: “I love you.”
