about two years after the event of ruins of the empire, korra returns to zaofu, only one of many trips since resolving the lingering conflict, or so she thinks. tension brews amongst the beifongs, kuvira at the root of it all.
loose ends are never completely tied, and words left unsaid always come to light. reunited in the prison of kuvira’s own making, the two of them are forced to face the feelings they’ve put aside, or stop the world trying.

the year is 178 AG. the avatar is dead.
avatar korra's death is a fatal blow to a desecrating world. she was in her prime, leaving no preparation in case of her early demise. the earth kingdom begins to see an increase of pillaging, devastating the rural parts of the nation. being left to defend themselves due to the wealthy becoming ignorant, the people of the earth kingdom have turned to survivalism. a superiority of benders. spreading propaganda and fear, their goal? a world without nonbenders.
fifteen years pass, and the next avatar is yet to be found. in the midst, the beifong family is set for a change in its leadership. du'ego beifong, in line for the throne, daughter of an infamous dictator who reigned years ago, has everything to lose. including the fact that her younger sister, cao'an, was born with the avatar spirit. but when she's granted a shocking change of leadership that changes her life, & a mysterious sponsorship leads her down a bloody path, cao'an is forced to step up into korra's shadow and cease the looming war. the only question is...who will you trust?Series

having been imprisoned for six months, kuvira is a tattered, beaten remnant of anything she once was, overtaken by grief and insanity. reliving every second of her misdeeds, imagining every worst case scenario as to the fate of her daughter, who was torn from her without a word.
unsuspectedly, a visitor comes for her, after months of silence, korra only serves as a painful reminder of the promises both of them failed to fulfill. she only has to wonder what is demanded of her now.

Summary
