Suddenly, the pounding of footsteps could be heard, and Ciri listened carefully, trying to make out who it was by the sound.
It was something most of the others had mastered already, thanks to their dumb Witcher hearing, but Ciri had been getting better at it. She'd already assumed it would be either Jaskier or Dandelion, since they were the two most eager to teach her music, and the footsteps were loud and messy, very unlike Dandelion's flouncy movements- so, Jaskier, then.
As he came into view, Ciri rushed forward to greet him, but was beaten to it and enveloped in an eager and just-a-bit-too-tight hug. Huh, Jaskier usually...
"CiCi!" The bard squealed in her ear, voice pitched high enough to hurt Roach's ear if she'd been nearby.
Ohh. That explained the stomping, then.
Or, Ciri is surprised by a different alter than she'd expected, but can't seem to figure out why they seem so down.

"You don't have a gift," The boy frowns. Kick.
"Well, I-" Curt pauses, feeling oddly embarrassed. "I am the present. Me coming, I mean." Curt reaches for the cheap wine the attendant had poured him earlier and takes a sip, refusing to let some annoying child make him nervous.
The boy looks him up and down before shaking his head. "You're not a very good present."
Curt spits half the drink out.
"Mama-" The boy turns, poking the woman next to him on a shoulder, "If you were having a party and Daddy showed up without a present and said he was the present, would you like it?"
The woman looks affronted for a moment before snorting. "If Daddy ever tried to pull something like that, he'd be looking for a new place to live."
The boy nods decidedly and turns back around.
"I think your wife is gonna kick you out." Kick. Kick.
Or, 5 times Curt and Owen had awful airline experiences, and 1 time it ended up alright.

"Come on. I promise, whatever it is, I won't think it's silly." Waving a hand, Crowley removed his glasses, staring at Aziraphale expectantly.
Eventually, Aziraphale sighed, giving in. "It's just... Do you remember that program we watched with Muriel earlier?"
Immediately, Crowley regretted removing his shades as he fought to keep his eyes from lighting up. Clearly, Aziraphale was upset about something, which of course means that Crowley took it very seriously, but fuck, the notion of Aziraphale being this worked up over a show for toddlers WAS a LITTLE bit funny.
Aziraphale's eyes narrowed. "You think it's silly."
Crowley feigned confusion. "The show? Well, it's a bit light, sure, but I think that's what they prefer for children to watch, isn't it?"
"Yes, well. For a 'light' children's program, it does seem to get a bit- well, a bit sad at times, doesn't it?"
Or, at Muriel's request, Crowley and Aziraphale agree to watch Bluey, thinking it will be harmless enough. However, it turns out that after 6,000 years of trauma, sometimes you really need to have a cry, pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and keep going. After all- the show must go on!

"I wish I was wanted," he whispers, and Luffy feels as if his blood has gone ice cold. "I want to be wanted, not just needed, because that's different. The bandits are dumbasses and would get themselves killed the second they tried to hunt the stuff I bring back home. They'd starve without me and Dadan... And Sabo... Sabo's a moron and would get killed in the Terminal without my help. They need me, but they don't want me."
The crushing loneliness that once plagued him rears its ugly head, creating a hollow core in his chest. In that single instant, those few words had carved out his insides like a hot knife through butter, and Luffy first thought is that he has to stop it from consuming the other boy the way it once had him.
Not-quite-five year old Luffy overhears a wish at Dawn Island's Wish festival, leading to him befriending Ace and Sabo earlier than in canon. They have no idea how to deal with the ball of sunshine named Monkey D Luffy, but they're gonna try.
Can be read as a standalone oneshot. AU context in beginning notes.

“I heard somethin’ that another kid said to one of the grown ups.” Luffy shovels a few bites into his mouth, still hesitant to ask, even if Makino always answers his questions. She even goes to other people if she doesn’t know just so she can tell him. It helps with the empty feeling.
Makino hums softly, carding her fingers through Luffy’s tangled wavy hair. She pulls out a few small pieces and begins to make a small braid by his ear, unbothered by the stretching silence. Once she finishes it off with a tiny red rubber band, she tucks it into the rest of his hair to hide it. It’s not the first time she’s done this, but Luffy still doesn’t know what they're for either. “Do you want to ask about the thing you heard?”
Luffy’s plate is already empty by the time he looks up, nose scrunched up in a way that makes wrinkles across his small face, “What does ‘I love you’ mean?”
Luffy's been a lonely child since Garp left him in Foosha, his strength and oddities scaring others away within the first day. When Makino notices, she reaches out to him and quickly begins to love him as her own son.
This can be read as a stand alone fic without any affiliation with the AU.
