    COMMOCT FRIST CHAPTER

I'm 100% with you on the whole Doc only has the Hornet as a car deal, but I disagree with it being barley running. After Doc fixed it up, he started to keep expert maintenance on it. To the point it was an abstention. In a way it helps keep his drive to race alive, but it also reminds him to never go back since the crash destroyed his car. By the time of his death the car is spotless, and Lighting is now in charge of maintenance and is at the same pace Doc was about it. Not driven by racing passion, but out of respect for the car that made both him and Doc's career. Most people think it's holding on by a thread, but a video mysteriously pops up on Dinaco's YouTube page and it's of the Hornet ripping up some dirt track. I just love the idea that Doc's car just refuses to die. In some way it has Doc's soul in it and if the car didn't fail on him after the crash, then it ain't failing on Lighting and his family.

Yet again this does come from my experience of having one blue jacket that got ripped once but now has a patch and refuses to go down without a fight.

Lightning sniffs. "I hate him for leaving me. It's just...I don't hate him."

"Well, love is like that." Doc says. "If we could choose, life would be easier."

"Do you still love your dad?"

Doc rubs his jaw in that way he does when he doesn't like a question. "No," he says, quietly, like he's admitting a terrible crime. "He wasn't a good man, Lightning."

    "Like my foster parents?"

Doc thinks about that, his hand moving to the back of his neck. "I guess so, yeah."

"Then Smokey got you." Lightning says. He smiles when the weight visibly leaves Doc's shoulders. "And I wound up with you."

"You really don't have much luck, do you?" Doc says and he ruffles Lightning's hair. He chuckles, all proud of himself for messing up Lightning's hairstyle and doesn't let him retaliate, which is very unfair of him. "Quit trying to kill me, rookie. That's for splashing me earlier!"

"You're a mean old fossil." Lightning snaps out heatlessly. "I'm gonna put Nair in your shampoo."

"That's vicious." Doc tells him. "Speaking of hair, can I borrow your dryer? I want to dry out this letter before the ink fades."

"You can use it if you can figure out how it works."

"It can't be that hard if you figured it out."

Lightning rolls his eyes and goes to find it. Maybe one day he might tell Doc about the tiny circles dotted over his abdomen. But then he thinks of the pity. He shakes his head at the thought.

Some things are better left unknown.

"Boys are tough." Paul said, but he couldn't bring himself to tell Smokey he didn't need him. It just felt...nice. No one had touched him like this in a long time, not since he'd woken up that morning to find his mama had gone away.

"Well, you ain't gonna be a boy forever." Smokey said, moving his arm so he could stroke Paul's hair. "Men ain't so tough."

    "Why not?"

"Because we've figured out that there's a time and a place to be tough, darlin'."

Paul scowled. "I'm not a darlin'."

Smokey smiled. Like he knew it annoyed him and would only keep doing it. "Well, you'll have to forgive me. I'm a little soft for you."

    "Why?"

"Because you need someone who is."

Paul watched the water, white from falling, crash onto his scalded flesh. His hand was starting to feel numb from cold, but that was better than the pain, so it was fine by him. "Why isn't my pa soft?"

"Sometimes," Smokey said, thoughtfully. "Sometimes, people are taught the wrong things by their parents and they can't unlearn it. Or they don't want to."

    "Which one is my pa?"

    "Which do you think, darlin'?"

Paul shifted and thought about it, while his hand grew number and number. "Probably doesn't want to." he admitted. "I think he might be...I don't know, like anyone else's pa, if he wanted to be."

Smokey nodded. His eyes were soft and apologetic. "Wish it could be different."

    "Maybe Mama might have stayed."

"Probably." Smokey's hand squeezed his shoulder. "How's that hand feel now?"

    "Numb."

"Best take it out, then." Smokey stepped back and handed Paul a dish towel. "Don't worry about the peas. Think you can set the table one-handed?"

Glad he could still be helpful, Paul grabbed forks and knives and placed them by the wicker mats, discoloured and loosened from age. And then he played with a loose straw as he summoned the courage to ask the question he'd been wondering for a month; "Why did you take me from Pa?"

"Same reason you hid all my belts." Smokey said, easing the remaining peas out of their pods. "Which I'm not upset about," he added, like he knew Paul would start worrying. "I'd do the same thing, if I was you. Fact is, it ain't right to make a kid bleed." He looked up, soft bronze meeting wary blue. "Hell, it ain't right to hit him at all."

    "Pa says -"

"Horseshit is what your pa says." Smokey filled a new pan with water and set it over the tiny blue flame which made puffs of steam quickly rise up. "And it steams more than this water does." He added in the peas and walked over, his head almost brushing on the ceiling. "I know I probably looked scary that night. My pa didn't call me his little bull for nothin., I'm a big guy and always have been. It must have been terrifying."

"You told Pa you'd kill him."

"I did. Because if I'd left you there, I have no doubt at all that he would've ended up killing you. He was getting worse, wasn't he?"

Paul nodded. "Because I was getting bigger."

"Well, I'm always gonna be bigger than you are." Smokey ruffled his hair sympathetically as he scowled up at him. "Sorry, kid. You don't come from a bunch of giants like I do."

Paul was sorry about that, too.

"I'm always gonna be bigger," Smokey continues. "But all that means is I'm not gonna be as small as he was. There's not a chance of me hurting you, kid. One day you'll know that, but for now...I guess I can only ask that you remember I've said it."

Paul let go of the straw, allowing it to hang loosely over the table edge. "Smokey?"

    "Mm?"

    "I don't think you're scary any more."

"No? Well, that's good to hear. Why's that?"

"Because you're soft. Like you said."

Smokey chuckled. "Well, I can't argue with that." He crouched down, those warm autumnal eyes peering into Paul's. "One other thing here. It's okay to yell or cry...hell, you can turn the air blue if you're in pain or hurtin'. That's okay. It doesn't do any good to bottle it."

Paul sighed. Smokey had said that before. "I know," he said. "Just hard to remember." He leaned against Smokey's hip, hugging around his legs because of the fact that he could without being called a sissy.

Smokey's hand smoothed over his curls. "It's okay," he said. "We'll make it alright to come undone."

Hudson hisses through his teeth as he crawls into bed. He has to pause for a moment, breathing through the sharp, twinging pain radiating from his lower back. It rips down the back of his right leg like a hot poker, and he lowers himself to lean on one elbow before fumbling to take off his glasses.

    “Need a hand there, Hud?”

“‘M fine.” Hudson’s voice is thinner than he’d like. He drops his bifocals on the bedside table. “Long day.”

Sherwin hums idly. He lets out a satisfied sigh as he peels off the sock of his prosthetic, massaging the stump of his left ankle with his thumb. “Y’know you could take tomorrow off.”

“Can’t.” Hudson rolls onto his back slowly, trying in vain to avoid the twinging of his spine. “Got appointments.”

    “They’d understand, Hud.”

“I made a commitment. I’m sticking to it.”

“Mm, I know.” Sherwin leans over to kiss his partner on the lips. “Stubborn asshole.”

Hudson smiles against Sherwin’s mouth. “Jackass.”

    “Shithead.”

    “Bastard.”

    “That’s hurtful.”

Hudson laughs. “Is handsome bastard any better?”

Sherwin bobs his head from side to side. “Mmm, I think I can work with it.”

“You think, huh? Don’t hurt yourself.”

Sherwin snorts. He smacks Hudson’s chest, and the both of them giggle like teenagers as Hudson pulls the other man in for another kiss. The movement tugs at his back, and he grimaces, firm and unyielding when Sherwin’s lips meet his.

“Hey.” Sherwin’s voice and touch are soft. He combs his calloused fingers through Hudson’s salt and pepper hair. “D’jou take your meds today?”

Hudson’s grimace shifts, and he manages to glare with his eyes shut. “Knew I was forgetting something…”

“It happens.” Sherwin reaches across Hudson and reaches into the drawer with their stash of backup pills, for when they can’t make it to the supply in the kitchen. It’s the third bottle he picks up that contains what he’s looking for. He opens it easily and hands Hudson a muscle relaxer, which he swallows dry, then tosses it back into the drawer and settles down to sleep with his head against Hudson’s shoulder.

“Thank you, darlin’,” Hudson murmurs, wrapping his arm around Sherwin’s shoulders and kissing the top of his head.

“Anytime.” Sherwin turns slightly, kisses Hudson’s collarbone, and affectionately squeezes his plush waist. “Sweet dreams, sweetheart.”

A gentle smile settles on Hudson’s face. “Sleep well, Sher.”

    SLOW UPDATE LAST CHAPTER 6

“Mr. McQueen’s more conscious now,” she told him gently. “We’ve just managed to administer him a meal.”

Doc sighed deeply as he stepped into the room, seeing the kid – clad in a hospital gown – with a half-lidded look in his eyes.

“Enjoying the meal, hot rod?” He asked, lips pursed when he noticed Lightning jump out of nowhere. Like a startled cat. “How is it?”

“Wh- I mean, yeah, old man,” Lightning chuckled, eyeing Doc for a second before turning his attention back to finishing his food. “Food’s food.”

    “How’re you feeling?”

Lightning blinked as he set the spoon down, coughing awkwardly and just furrowing his brow.

    “Why are you so interested?”

Doc frowned, “are you feeling okay?”

“Look, I don’t know you! So. I don’t get why- Why do you even care?”

“What?” Doc hissed out, feeling like his stomach had just dropped in his chest.

    This could not be happening.
