And, after Prax shows him how, he pulls a bunch of plants from their pots, digs his big fingers up into tangled roots to free them. Root-bound, Prax calls it, when a plant confined to a small space doesn't have any more room to grow.

Dying, trapped in a crack in the world, Jayce has lost almost everything- save the memories. And in the darkness those come out in terrible, technicolor clarity. Every victory, every failure, how it all began- and how it ended. Every single time he stepped over the edge. Every time he fell.
(Jayce hadn't thought anything of him at first- easy to overlook an unwanted bureaucrat- easier still, to overlook a cripple.)
(Something sly about it, the cast of that pale face. Just how bright those golden eyes were, in the black. They seemed to catch the light, reflecting it back, like those of a young fox.)
