“I’m little, be–” Xie Lian starts out strong but loses face halfway through, and the last part trails off. “Be careful…”
“Little, mn?” Mouth tense, Hua Cheng crouches down at the edge of the path. He turns a graceful wrist and a few butterflies appear to carefully look between the stems.
It doesn’t take long at all for one to find him, and from this size, it’s huge! The butterfly's wings are taller than him, and its body the perfect size to ride like a sword.
“Hello,” Xie Lian greets it as usual.

After the Taumoeba leak, after I decided to die after all and turned my ship around to save Rocky, after Rocky's frantic calculations about food supplies, Taumoeba multiplication rates, and human caloric intake needs, after we realized that with some rationing and luck I would make it, but that we were headed toward the unknown territory of trying to rapid-prototype me a life support system and synthetic food supply on an inhospitable planet: after all of that, after everything, I shouldn't have been surprised that it only took a few months on board the Hail Mary for things to get weird.

“Oh,” I say. “That’s unusual, right?”
"Very," Rocky hums.
My throat tightens. "Does that mean there's something wrong? Are you sick?"
Rocky makes a gesture I usually interpret as "not exactly". "Not sick," he says. "But doctors still worry. When Eridian start to make fewer eggs, this usually means laying period of life is over soon. Rocky very young for this. Rocky supposed to be in ideal time of life for laying. Rocky younger than Adrian, even." He shifts on three of his feet. Already, my mind is racing ahead, wondering -- "Doctors told Rocky to ask Grace, is this radiation side effect, question?"

"Rocky," I repeat, slowly. "Like the movies?"
"No," Rocky deadpans, giving me a look like I'm stupid. "Like the rocks."
